  • May not be Worth It

    By A2JLUKX6SDEG31 on 2008-05-17
I've played COD4 for a grand total of about 16 full days (384 hours) and still appreciate it very much. Like Halo 3, this is primarily a multiplayer FPS with a sidecar campaign that is well-written, choreographed, and voice-acted. All there is to say about the game has been said, however, on the original game's forum, so let's focus on the GOTY Edition's only added feature: the Map Pack.

I purchased the map pack the day it dropped and instantly had mixed feelings. Two of the maps, Creek and Killhouse, only tangentially keep with the game's fiction. Creek is vast, set in an undulating eastern European countryside. Due to the map's size, most players equip sniper rifles and just pick others off as they make their way through choke points and hence has gained a reputation as a "camper's paradise", meaning that players tend to just sit and wait, or "camp", rather than rush their opponents. Killhouse, on the other hand, is somewhat like Halo 3's Foundry map in that it is a big generic warehouse within which players navigate generic barriers and structures. It really is supposed to resemble an indoor military training area and can only be accessed online by playing Team Objective games (like Search and Destroy, Sabotage, etc.) or playing private matches with your friends. If you don't appreciate campers in FPS's and would prefer not to play a map that feels "outside" the game's narrative space, you may not enjoy these two maps.

Chinatown is in a class of its own, and well outside the game's fiction. It is a remake of an old FPS map and very dark, with convoluted passages through a cluster of themed buildings and various shifts in altitude depending upon which building you're in. In contrast to Creek, this is a map that favors close-quarters weapons like SMGs and Shotguns, but doesn't totally exclude LMGs or Assault Rifles. It stands apart from the game proper due to its theme, and if you like getting down and dirty in an urban setting, you might enjoy this map.

Broadcast is a large map lifted almost pixel-for-pixel from the single-player campaign. It is a television station in a city somewhere in eastern Europe, and affords players the opportunity to battle both indoors (various offices, a recording studio, mainframe room) and out (parking lot, roof, small adjacent buildings). Out of the Map Pack maps it boasts the best "flow", meaning that time between scuffles is short and that there is easy, obvious passage between areas and floors. Campers and rushers are both satisfied as the indoor action favors machine guns while snipers may pin down marks from accross the parking lot.

All of that being said, I'm a little disappointed that the GOTY version of the game doesn't include any visual or technical enhancements like other GOTYs have (thinking of Morrowind and Oblivion here) and only includes a free set of mostly-mediocre maps that will, after time, be free anyway. Also, it doesn't seem like a sound marketing decision to charge full price for the GOTY Edition when a consumer can purchase the original game (from Amazon) and the maps (from XBL) for $10 less than it costs to buy the GOTY Edition. Questionable...

  • A Lot of fun...single player mission too short

    By A32LR27V9CW2IA on 2008-06-02
This game was terrific. Lots of different missions and weapons. Adrenaline-pumping action and tension. But the single player mission is very short. I'm not one for online play, so this was a bit discouraging given the price of the game, but like Bioshock or Gears of War, I might actually be tempted to play it through again.

  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Best FPS Ever!

    By A2AAFS3YS7Y6Z3 on 2008-05-28
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is truly amazing First Person Shooter.

    Pros:
Modern Warfare has the most realistic graphics ever made for a game. It's very much like being inside a film. It is a visual feast. The sounds of wars are as real as if you are on the battlefield. The bad guys are smart and adjust as the situations change. The game has a great story with more than a few interesting characters. One of the most compelling aspects of the game is the accurate portrayal of the chaos of war. Confusion reigns as the enemy floods forward. What to do, where to go, when to stand and when to charge, are all choices that you make in the fluid situations of combat. The battles are long. The enemies just keep coming. Very, very cool.

If you are a first timer in the wonderful world FPS's start out on the Recruit level. If you are an experienced gamer you will find the upper levels more than challenging.

    Multiplayer:
Modern Warfare's multiplayer is amazing. This is THE best shooting multiplayer experience to be had on line. Many features and new maps add to the addiction. But, if you are a FNG, playing online in multiplayer can be a bit difficult to get the hang of. Be prepared to suffer some humiliation until you get your skill levels up. Hang in there.

The Arcade Mode is an great additional (and mostly overlooked) feature. Here you play to rank yourself in the Modern Warfare universe across the planet. Allso, very cool.

HIGH replay value. A whole lot of bang (pun intended) for your buck.

    Cons:
Not many. The game is fairly short. The Veteran level is insanely difficult. The cheats available to the PC are not available on the 360. That's it.

You will not be disappointed. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is great fun and an the most amazing gaming experience to date. Plus, it doesn't have the mindless violence of any of the Grand Theft Auto series.

PS: The low star reviews are by young spoilers. They like "their game" best and feel it their "duty" to "shoot down" any other game that the gaming community thinks more of than "theirs." C of D 4 didn't get to be the 2007 Game of the Year (beating Halo 3, Assassin's Creed, BioShock and a host of others) by being anything less that near gaming perfection. As a grey gamer (been playing shooters for decades), I can say without hesitation that C of D 4 ranks 1st in it's class and takes a backseat to none.

  • Nearly Perfect!

    By A1BY204UEVGOR6 on 2008-08-26
Too bad I cannot give this game 4.9 stars. It was that close. Everything good that you have heard about this game is true. There are just some things that seperate it from a full 5 stars.

Actually only 3 come to mind:

In the single player mode, some of the AI characters who are "Force Recon Marines" are Privates (or paygrade of E-1). Perhaps the creators just didn't research their rankings enough. In the American military you advance up to E-3 (Lance Corporal for Marines) after 18 months, any Force Recon Marine would already be long past the rank of Private.

The second mistake was also related to rank. Captain Price is an O-3 (3rd officer paygrade), yet 15 years ago (in the sniper mission) he was a young Leftenant (an O-2). If he was a leftenant 15 years ago he should be at least a Lt. Colonel (O-5) or Colonel (O-6) by now. Yes O-6 in the Navy is called Captain, but then he would be placed in a desk job in any case. Either way for him to still be a Captain he would have had to have been reduced in rank several times, and have higher-tenured out (released prior to retirement for failing to pick up rank in a set number of years).

The third and last gripe I have is with the sniper mission. Great mission. But the sniper rifle you use when posting out in the Hotel is supposed to be the barrett M107, which was not around 15 years ago, when that mission was set.

These may seem rediculous, but hey, 5 stars doesn't come easy. Wish I could give them 4.9 stars, but 4 will have to suffice.

  • Same Great COD4 With Extra Maps for Online!!!

    By A3ENDUQVBFEBKF on 2008-04-06
U should get this game.....Best shooter thus far and it comes with 4 new maps for the same price as the Regular Edition...

  • Game of the what?
    By A22KVQRVAX0OEI on 2008-05-06
This game is very realistic. If you came from Halo to play this, or any other game where you can take hits, dont play this online right away. It is extreamly fasted paced and as a noob to this game, I got owned my first match, but I picked up the controlls really quick. They are easy to use and fast to react. Very realistic. Though when playing on some of the maps, there is some mystery person always yealling every few moments, and that is really annoying when your are trying to get someone and your listening for them around the corner and the voice yealls at you. Arrg. overall 5 stars for the realism and game play.

  • Better than Halo 3
    By A2LSX3PNFK5L16 on 2008-06-04
I purchased a Xbox 360 with the intent of buying Halo 3 the first day it came out. I purchased and played Halo 3 for about 6 months and a friend introduced me to COD 4. Call of Duty 4 online is the most motivating game I have played because of all the challenges and the fact that once you get to the peak level, instead of, like halo 3, not moving from that level, you make a choice and have the opportunity to do it all over again with higher ranking and more bonus offers. I would highly recommend this game to anyone looking for an online game, and would recommend that anyone about to throw something at a breakable object by playing halo 3, should try and play this spectacular game.

  • Great Game..not recommended for younger children
    By A2RJZJBPLSOUFH on 2008-06-09
This game has awesome graphics, terrific missions that you can go on and great to play and stratigies with. Although it is a little more graphic then the other call of dutys and would not recommend it for younger children. Other then that I would recommend playing this game and would recommend it to other people.

  • Grab Your Gear, We're Goin' In...
    By A3P0KYJJMIECTX on 2008-08-02
About three months ago I bought this game for the PS3 and had a great time playing through the campaign on all the difficulty levels. However, since I was using a PS3, playing online wasn't really an option.
Finally (last Thursday) I wised up, traded in the PS3 and bought an Elite. Now I'm online and "Fraggin like a pro".
The online experience is where this game shines. There's nothing like getting together with 5 or 6 friends and blowing the crap out of each other (ha. ha.).
But seriously, the way that you level up is refreshing and gives you incentive to keep playing. The higher you rank, the better weapons you unlock. But the best part of the multi-player is that it's accessible for everyone. It's possible for anyone to just dropped in and take out a vet.
All in all, it's one of the best shooters I've ever played. I highly recommend this game for purchase if you have Live. If not, the campaign is great for a rental.
    Hope this review helps.

  • Call Of duty 4
    By AHIW5A5MM24VH on 2008-07-25
I had play all the call of duty series, but this one is best of all.

  • Horrible Multiplayer
    By AEP2JNMG241ZN on 2008-08-03
The multiplayer for this game is horrible, perhaps unless you have the best of connections to the game. I don't think it was so bad until it was updated several months after its release. If you like dying about one or two seconds after you spawn, or dying to enemies that you haven't even registered on your screen, you may actually like this game. Also, the realism factor is very low in this game. On half the maps, you're likely to find that your opposing team is made up of snipers by more than 50%. This game really has nothing to do with "modern warfare".

The single player part of the game is even worse than the multiplayer. It's more like a fantasy game than a war-action game. There is a fun level, though, where you get to fire out of a gunship. I thought that was pretty unique and interesting. I'm going to stick to the games like the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter games.

  • IF GAME DOESN'T WORK DON'T EXPECT A REFUND
    By AGVQN8QUXSLWD on 2008-10-28
First, I have no complaints about this game - mostly because I haven't seen it yet. I bought this for my nephew and he was so deeply disappointed because it did not work. After speaking to multiple customer service reps at X-Box (who were wonderful) - they determined that Amazon must have sold him a bogus copy even though it read as though it was North American made. Amazon did NOT mention that I would not be able to return this item if it had been opened - how am I supposed to know if it works unless I open it?? Amazon tried to give me a gift coupon for not even half of what I paid - of which I will never use since I will never shop on Amazon again.

  • WOW
    By A1FSGBHRT7GGP0 on 2008-05-10
Well... all I want to say is WOW!! Very INTENSE! A must buy!! Wish I got it sooner!

  • It's OK
    By on 2008-05-10
As an avid Xbox 360 player, I find that this game is WAY to overhyped. Yes it is fun for the first few weeks you play it, but the game modes do not have the ingenuity to keep one intrested. Also, once you reach commander for the first time, there is no sastifaction. You fell like, wow, that was way too easy, so what do they do, prestige mode. Good idea, poor execution. Basically you get to lose everything for a little symbol. totally worth it...NOT. If you are getting this game as a transition while you wait to get Gears 2 or Rainbow 2, then this is a good buy, but if you want a game to play for the long haul, i Suggest Rainbow Six Vegas 2.

  • Title says it all - GOTY
    By A1HVH81RI4S30A on 2008-06-12
Best game I have ever played, hands down. Faster paced and more rewarding (even when your team loses, you can still receive points) than Halo 3. I am a first person shooter player so take that into consideration before you flog me.

  • Excellent title
    By A2YUGC8AH1Z6K8 on 2008-06-21
This will please any war fighting game fans, and even first timers. Graphics are amazing and the missions are great fun. Haven't tried multiplayer yet but I hear it's a whole nuther world. A must for cod players and as well for anyone who owns an xbox 360.

  • Don't buy this unless you have Live
    By AFQ8S6RNH0P2R on 2008-06-28
The single player portion of the game is basically a tutorial for the multiplayer, but the multiplayer is worth every penny. The maps are diverse and allow for different play styles and the RPG-style leveling up extends the replayability.

  • Call Of Duty 4 Modern Warfare Game Of The Year
    By A36F0GX5VUTYNA on 2008-06-28
Call Of Duty 4 Modern Warfare Game Of The Year. This is the best game that I have ever played. Game of the year yes it is. Playing on line with friends and family cant beat it. I use to watch TV for hours now I play the this game and I dont fall asleep watching it blink your eyes and you die.

  • Team Killing Fun!!!
    By A1NVKR1UB2Q754 on 2008-07-18
This game is great for team killing. Once you get to level 15 you unlock hardcore team death match, and hardcore search and destroy. Hardcore search and destroy is best for team killing because there is no respawning. I like to take an RPG and take out my team right at the beginning of the level. Since there is no respawns you get some pretty good feedback from the other players over your headset LOL. The best perks to use for team killing is sonic boom, and martyrdom.

  • Best darn game there is
    By A8JDR1UG0D9O5 on 2008-08-09
I bought this game from Amazon last November as a pre-order. Eleven months later I have wasted a grotesque number of hours playing the online version. This game cannot be beat. I have eleven other Xbox 360 games, including Halo 3 and Bioshock, and I have played none but COD4.

The single player game is the only video game that I have personally played all the way through. It kept my interest and kept me coming back for more. This game is awesome and I have already pre-ordered World at War, coming out in two months.

I have to add that I am in my upper 40s and play online with my nephew who is 800 miles away. We have spoke to each other more in the last three months while playing than we had in the last 10 years.

  • Very good sarter game
    By on 2008-08-11
So, this game is a great starter game for most hard core gamers that are only about to buy a 360, so, buy this game with it. The game of the year edition is the exact same as the regular one, but it includes new maps, like kill house and creek. But, im giving this game a 4 and a half out of 5, because creek is very much a camper map. But, this is a fantastic game overall and i recommend it to almost everybody that like FPS's.

  • Sooooo Good....
    By A3JBHBU9ANVTIJ on 2008-08-12
The stroy, controls and overall fun factor of the game ranks up with ne there with the Halo franchise, as well as Splinter Cell's (both outstanding in my book). The one dissapointment, in general, being the campaign was MUCH too short. Whatever happened to a game that took two weeks to a month to beat? Nowadays, we're down to a day to a week at most in the vast majority of new games. Nevertheless, multiplayer is untouchable and the realism factor (on hardcore) is pretty intense, though I still think Battlefield:Bad Company wins the "Best" award. Now THAT was a cool story (but also too short of a campaign!) Another thing thy mighty game designers have been leaving out is Co-Op Campaigning, one of the greatest features of any game, regardless of the story. Theres just a cool concept of runnigna round with a buddy and tearing shi- stuff up. Otherwise, AWSOME game.

  • Best game for Xbox 360 / PC, Period.
    By A1Z2KN9GO4KVWW on 2008-08-12
Just a real quick review. This game is EXCELLENT. Best game for the Xbox 360 and PC, period. This version comes with a token to download the extra map packs. You won't be disappointed.

  • My Thoughts? - Amazing.
    By A2SYVOQ1VL2G0I on 2008-08-14
This game is amazing, you have to get it. It has a great campaign mode, even though it is extremely short. I was able to complete the game in about 6-7 hours. However, the graphics, storyline, and gameplay are excellent and keeps you sucked into the game.

The real killer however, is the online multiplayer. Call of Duty 4 has a revolutionary game engine, and is one of the best multiplayer games in my opinion. Levels and ranks lead to better weapons, perks, attachments, etc. This gives you a goal to strive for, and the prestige mode (where you start all over but get a special symbol) is great for bragging rights.

Overall, i'd highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys first person shooters.

  • Amazing in all facets
    By A3EOM309A1BVCB on 2008-08-14
A game that stands the test of time. I've purchased GTA IV, Madden 2009, and several other games and this is still the one that resides in my 360.

The single player is short, but adrenaline-laden. The slow-motion sequences at the ends of certain levels (mile-high club, and the final showdown on the bridge come to mind) are so good that I've replayed them several times!

The multi-player is incredibly fun and engrossing. It's the reason my best friend bought a 360 of his own. All you need is 10 minutes, and you can have a blast on Free for All, or spend more time on one of the "big maps" playing ground war. It's well worth your time and money.

Take it from me...if you look at my reviews, I'm stingy with a 5-star rating, reserving it for only the best (think Resident Evil IV, etc.). Drop a few bucks, and indulge in this one before World at War brings fans back to the reality of prior CoD games...

  • I like it.
    By A26UTOO3WUGW4B on 2008-08-24
I like it for work pressure relief. Great graphics. You are able to shoot weapons that you can not normally get your hands on including "Puff".
