I bought this item the last time I saw it on sale. At first I was very happy, while in the US on the I-5. When I went on 3 secondary highways there was no information available on points of interest. When I got to Canada I found out there were no maps and I could not add Canada or Mexico maps. I am very disappointed. Now I am in Canada so can't even take the *#@* back. Garmin comes with the maps for Canada and you can buy the ones for Mexico.

  • Where's Walmart????

    By A2GLXUAHKK665Q on 2008-08-02
I bought this as an Amazon Daily deal also. After reading the reviews I was a little worried about purchasing the Magellan 4040 refurb but I needed to upgrade from my Garmin I3 and I felt the price was reasonable considering a new map for Garmin is almost 100 bucks.

I can certainly say that it was an upgrade - I have had no problems in the two weeks since having it. It was very easy to operate and get started right out of the box. the large screen is nice and easy to read with an upgraded version of it's program the display shows estimated arrival time, along w/ length to next turn. One feature that I really like is that the map will show me how my next turn will look with an icon in the bottom right corner.

Some features are virtually useless like AAA directory and service. I would imagine that if I were a AAA member it would be nice but even the POI featured in AAA directory are not very helpful. I live in the Chicago suburbs and very often I cannot find a local store that should be listed in the directory. This is more of a map problem than a device problem but nonetheless it is a problem. I am surrounded by WalMarts and my device could not find a Walmart within 50 miles. after an extensive search the device pointed me to a Walmart Optical in another state. I'm finding that the map is very inefficient at finding places which I know the names of and are readily available on my Garmin I3. This is probably the most distracting feature (or lack of) that I find with the device. Although I have to say that It is very easy to input addresses and the Magellan is quick to calculate the route for me.

On the positive side I like that when I turn the unit on it does not take an unreasonable amount of time to get me to the map screen and subsequently find the satellites. As a matter of fact I'm quite impressed with its satellite finding abilities. My Garmin I3 had serious issues keeping a satellite read in the city of Chicago with all of it's tall buildings but this little baby had no problems for me although It did take me on a couple of longer than needed routes. I think this is normal though with most devices I've seen (I travel a lot and have much experience with GPS devices).

I sent an email to the Magellan customer service site because the install disk would not let me go through the process of installing "POI Manager" onto the Magellan 4040 and have not heard back from them in over two weeks. i realize that is not a good sign but considering what I upgraded from I don't feel it's a bad place to be.

I did try the bluetooth feature which is really nice. One phone conversation was loud and clear while another conversation was a little difficult to hear. It should be noted that the clear conversation happened with a land line at the other end while the not-so-clear happened with a cell phone. I have not used the feature since I have a bluetooth earpiece that I absolutely love. Another nice feature but just a bell/whistle for me.

I noticed that this unit has the option to upgrade to a voice command unit. That's a nice feature as I've grown to love the voice command of my BlackBerry. Unfortunately that upgrade will set you back another 100 bucks. Too rich for my blood.

Overall I like the device for the price and I can't complain. The large screen as well as the easy to manipulate menu's make this a 4 star product for me. At 150 bucks you really can't beat the price for all of its features. I would have easily given the Magellan 4040 refurb a fifth star if I could only find the nearest WalMart, Walgreens, Target, etc..

    ****UPDATE**** Sept 16,2008
As most other reviewers have noted the customer service dept is pretty much useless. The email i sent in regards to the "install POI manager" error was finally answered albeit a completely useless and non relevant answer to my problem (twice). I emailed them back and received virtually no help. I just hope I never have to contact the company for a bigger issue.

The POI may be a nice feature for a computer geek like me but the Magellan 4040 still has had nothing else that I have been disappointed with. I love the unit and even recommended the same unit to my parents from a popular electronic store online (which rhymes with "tiger direct dot com") when they had a refurb for 80 bucks. Just my luck the same unit goes on sale for 2 days only at almost 1/2 the price! But overall I find that the unit still lives up to my expectations. I use it just about everyday to work since it gives me a constant update on my ETA - also comes in handy to have it operating when traffic gets out of control and I need to find a shortcut.

Very very poor customer service. Cannot buy a product hoping it runs good through its warranty period.

I received a Magellan 4250 for Fathers' Day. A week later the car charger/FM wire fell apart. I ordered two chargers online from their website three weeks ago. It's still not here and they give the "foreign customer service" runaround when you try to find out where your stuff is.Kind of like Dell. Really bad service.

  • So happy with the first one, bought it again

    By A1CMULB2KTGOEZ on 2008-08-17
I travel (via car) for a living. Over the past 4 years I have had a Garmin 330, a Tom Tom 792 (?), a Garmin Nuvi 650 and a Magellan 4040. Not one of them was perfect under all conditions or in all cities I travel but the Magellan 4040 did most of the basic GPS functions better than any of the others.

On a recent trip to New England, US Aiarways was good enought to drop my suitcase in a matter that destroyed my 4040 (cracked the screen and LCD. Had to buy a new GPS and decided to buy the same one again, the Magellan 4040.

The most important reason I bought the Magellan again was the ability to access most common functions with less button (touch-screen pushes)pushing than the Garmin units. Entering addresses is easier and the automatic split-screen turn display is very useful. Think about this, the less buttons you have to push, the more time your eyes are on the road at 70 MPH.

Also, the "AAA Tourbook" is a great plus.

  • Last time on Sale here bought one
    By A3GDP6VJYFHJBT on 2008-07-14
Considering what this device could be but isn't is very disappointing and does reflect poorly on Magellan. It cannot find my bank even when I enter the address and tell it the name. It cannot find DMV, I had to go on the internet to get the address and then enter that. Other then that it is very cool with the touch screen and talking directions. Now if it only had updated directions.

  • Refurbished GPS works great!
    By A1R3UB0D2UXTSW on 2008-08-30
This item was purchased as a replacement for the same model GPS unit stolen from my daughter's car. It arrived promptly and works great!

As you may or may not know, Magellan GPS units are wonderful, but their Customer Service is the worst in the industry, by far. If you never have anything go wrong with one of their units, you'll do fine. If you *do* have something go wrong, or even just require their help to set up software, etc., then God Help You ...

This is why I've given the unit only 3 stars. 5 stars for the unit, and *0* for Magellan as a company.

  • Good value
    By A23BXVNBGXQ33Y on 2008-07-18
After leaving a Garmin GPS in a rental car in Europe, I decided to buy this unit because it was on sale. It functioned well and was as accurate as my Garmin. Operating instructions are not great and it was hard to download the manual on an Apple computer. Nice screen and touch control. I haven't set up bluetooth yet so that report is yet to come.

  • Wife will learn
    By A1BO4BHIB56CO7 on 2008-09-02
Bought this for my wife. She is a bit un-educated about electronics. I am using this quit a bit now, my Duaghter is off to a university. It helps alot if you have the adress avaibale for entering the route!
I love the way it goes dark at sundown and lightens up when the sun rises! Lets me know when the headlights should go on andf off. hehehe

Great details and a must have for new drivers!

Only draw-back, newer drivers can get really use to using this device instead of learning the roads! I would suggest this for more experienced drivers myself, but helps a great deal for going to new places.

I would highly suggest buying a GPS. If you are on the border, and contemplating getting one - the answer is YES!

  • Very easy to use, TTS, Blue Tooth, Large Screen @ Low Price
    By A2HHZDHNBQ89PX on 2008-09-14
I got this unit to replace Mio c230. The refurbished unit looks like new, no blemishes what so ever; and ready to use right out of the box. The first main screen has three icons: "Show Map" (will show you the current location), "Enter Address", and "Points Of Interest". At the bottom of the screen there are three small icons: "Home" (to store your home address, by tapping on it the Maestro will take you home), "AAA Roadside Assistance" icon, and "Phone" icon (to make phone calls thru the unit's Blue Tooth). Entering address is real easy; you have a choice of entering zip code, city name, or current city. Then enter the street name, just few letters and the Maestro will find few matching street names to choose from; then enter the number, choose the navigation preference (Fastest Time, Least / Most use of highway or Shortest distance); that simple. The destination may also be an intersection, or picked from the address book, where you can store a large number of addresses.
The second main screen has three icons: Trip Planer, where you can enter multiple addresses (up to 20), then chose the sequence or let the Maestro "optimize" the rout for you. This "Trip Planer" is very useful for anyone especially succor Moms, sales people and the likes (Garmin does not have this feature). The second icon "Exit POI" will display a list of POI on the next Freeway Exit, be it Gas, Food, ... etc. tap on anyone, and the Maestro will take you there. The last Icon is "User Options", where you can setup your preference: the map region, volume, brightness, trip computer, 2D / 3D map, Language, Time Zone.. .etc.
The map screen ("Normal" and "Routing" mode)is displayed while navigating, this is what I like the most: On the top it shows the name of street you're on, the direction of travel (N, E, S, W) and the satellite status. The bottom of the screen shows the time of the day, Main Menu Icon, and current speed. On the sides there are icons to zoom in or out, change volume or mute. If you tap on the direction indicator, it will show your current location (Street name & nearest crossing street) which can be saved to the "Address Book", and useful if you need roadside assistance . An arrow indicate your position on the map. In "Routing" mode, the screen shows the next maneuver icon in the lower left corner, tap on it to display a list of maneuvers. As you approach POI, it will be displayed on the screen, tap on POI, and the Maestro will take you there. As a maneuver is approached, the Maestro will automatically split the screen to show the shape / direction of the next maneuver. The bottom display is replaced by distance to next maneuver and remaining time / distance to final destination.
This unit also has an SD card expansion slot, and a standard earphone plug (which is helpful if you are in a convertible or on a motorcycle, I replaced my Mio C230 only because it lacked this feature). It comes pre loaded with maps for the US, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. A voice command option is available as well as traffic alert. Included in the box with the Maestro 4040: A/C home charger, Car Cigarette Lighter Charger, Windshield mount, Adhesive disk, Protective Pouch, Quick reference Guide, User Manual on CD and USB Data Cable.
This unit is very good overall and very easy to use. One thing worth noting: It will not remember a destination unless you save it in the address book; i.e. it will not keep a history log. I've also done some search, and it seems that there is no road map for Europe compatible with this unit. If someone knows of an available one, please let me know.

  • Works great so far!
    By A393F21OB0PA4G on 2008-07-24
I bought the Magellan 4040 off the goldbox deal a few weeks back. First of all, there's absolutely no sign to say the unit is refurbished except the sticker on the box. Unit is in mint condition with no scratches whatsoever and all the accessories are new. It already had the latest firmware update (v2.36) pre-installed.

Granted I've been using it for only a couple of days, but so far I couldn't be happier. From a cold start, it took only around 30 seconds for it to lock on to a signal and never lost it after that, and it usually locked in 10-15 seconds afterward. The routing is good (I can tell because I know the area pretty well), and is very quickly to recalculate once I misses a turn. When I purposefully missed a couple of exits on the highway, it was fast enough to reroute me before the next exit came up. The POI database is rich with built in AAA tourbooks, but a little slow to respond once you try searching for a POI. It shows the annoying hourglass while it's busy, of course, it uses Windows as the operating system...

The downside would be that it doesn't have mp3 and whatnot, but I wouldn't expect it from a GPS under $150. It doesn't look that much aesthetically pleasing to me, but maybe that's just me. The unit tends to be a little verbose, unnecessarily long directions and redundant directions: when I'm already on the highway, it tells me to keep going on the highway... But I can live with all of these as the major functions seem to work great, where else would I find a 4.3" GPS with all the features for under $150?

Only time will tell how well the unit will hold up, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I've heard many horror stories about the Magellan support..

  • Not Perfect but then again, Who is?
    By A6CAYJIV2Z9B2 on 2008-07-22
Let me start out immediately by saying I really like the Magellan 4040 GPS but it isn't perfect. Is there a GPS that is? I don't think so. A GPS is a great tool to have but I have yet to find any GPS that can replace local driving experience and good common sense. For example, I know that I can travel north on a particular route with no problem. I also know to avoid the same route when traveling south because of highway construction that closes down all lanes except one, bringing traffic to a crawl. I had high hopes for this particular GPS because of the acclaimed Magellan Traffic Service (available as an option) which is supposed to alert you to adverse traffic conditions. I purchased the traffic kit separately but the service is only available in certain cities and while Atlanta, GA (where I live) is supposed to be one of those cities, it seems there is no one manning the command post as I have yet to see any traffic alerts. The traffic kit consist of replacing the original cradle that comes with the 4040. On the plus side, this cradle is made better and includes an external antenna connection which you don't get otherwise. I use an external antenna because I mount mine just below the radio beneath the dash and no GPS will pick up signals very well unless it's antenna has a clear view of the sky. So I mount an external antenna on my rear shelf with a clear view via the back glass. I don't like anything mounted on my windshield and the screen will wash out easier by the sun light there. So while the Magellan Traffic Service is useless for me, the optional traffic kit mount proved beneficial.

I recently used the Magellan 4040 on a 1300 mile round trip that consisted of combined scenic and freeway driving. I started out in Atlanta, GA and traveled to and from Mansfield, OH. I first planned my trip using a combination of atlas and mapquest.com. I wanted a mixture of scenic roads and freeways on the way up and absolute fastest time on the return trip. Also I needed to make a slight detour to Wytheville, VA on the way up. This is where the trip planner functionality of the GPS came in very handy. I was able to sit down on my sofa and enter all of my destinations and even run a simulation of the trip as if I was on the road driving. The simulator is excellent for just sitting down and learning all of the numerous features that this GPS is capable of. Of course there were times when the GPS wanted to go a different route than what I wanted and this goes back to my beginning statement alluding to the fact that the GPS can't take the place of the human mind. A GPS is nothing more than a small computer running a piece of software. Being a software developer myself I am well aware that an application can only be as good as the programmer(s) that programmed it. They also rely on having current map data to make correct determinations and this is where I think all current GPS units fall short. I would love to see Magellan or Garmin provide constant map data updates via the Internet. I would gladly pay a premium for a subscription service that would allow me to get updates on a daily, weekly or even a monthly basis. As it stands now the map data is at least 2 years stale right out of the box and the concurrent updates will also be 2 years old when I get those. There's gotta be a better way!

So, why did I give it 4 stars instead of 5? Partly because of the fact that you must purchase the optional traffic kit to be able to use an external antenna but mainly because the firmware can be a bit buggy at times selecting routes. This occurred on my return trip to Atlanta; I live just north of Atlanta and when I was ready to leave Mansfield, OH, I punched in my home destination using the fastest available route and the itinerary initially had me going south of Atlanta before finally heading back north which would have been an extra 2 hours of driving. I say "initially" because as I got closer to GA, the itinerary miraculously healed itself and began showing the correct routes to take. Hopefully a future firmware revision will cure this but for now I will be very careful to double check all routes ahead of time (which is a good idea anyway). This might be a deal killer for many, but for me the numerous positive features offset the negatives making this a great deal at a great price. Anything else I could say would be purely subjective to preference so I leave it at that.

July 28, 2008 UPDATE: Route miscalculation bug seems to be related to choosing the "Fastest Time". If I choose, "Most Use of Freeways", this has (so far) given the expected results. Still very happy with the unit.

  • Never got to find out how good it is...
    By A1F8Y2Z871PDF0 on 2008-07-24
Ordered the refurbished 4040 as an Amazon "deal". Unit looks to be perfect cosmetically, but it won't hold a charge. After hours of charging, it only reads two bars out of five. Back it goes, for refund. Never buying refurbished electronics again...

  • Excellent GPS for the money
    By AG86JAJQZK091 on 2008-08-26
As a refurbished GPS you can't beat it for the money.
AAA info is great if you are a AAA member or not.
Blue tooth handy if you want to call phone #'s in the GPS for reservations ETC.Has been very accurate. Occasionally will try to send you on a less preferred road but You can change travel from quickest shortest etc that will change that.I've found new features for the last 2 months.Seems very quick to start and re-route.I recommend this GPS to everyone.

  • Great GPS
    By A39ZO4NZRJIYAD on 2008-07-28
This Magellan Maestro is by far the best Gps I have owned and I have owned several. It is super sensitive, acquires satellites immediately, and the directions are almost always accurate. The SurfStarIII chipset is unbelievable, and the AAA tourbook is great. The only negative is the short battery life, but most people use this unit pluuged in. No Gps made today is perfect. I have owned 2 MIO Gps units which always sent you the long way and were so innacurate that at times they didn't recognize streets. The only Garmin I owned worked great bu didn't always hold satellites.

  • The best feature loaded GPS for $100 (refurbished)
    By A3RQ29REHH4CSM on 2008-09-22
I bought this refurbished for just $99 bucks as my first ever GPS. I had tried my friends Garmin c330 for a trip and decided to buy my own. The Garmins were too expensive for the features I wanted (4.3" screen, text to speech, and large POI database). Well this unit has all those features and adds bluetooth, AAA service, trip planner, and exit POIs to the list. It even has a voice recognition add-on option in case I want to upgrade in the future. So many features for a $99 unit is absolutely incredible. The routing calculation and re-routing calculation, if you miss a turn, takes slightly longer (by a few seconds) than the Garmin c330 but it is perfectly acceptable for my needs. I do prefer Garmin's menu system as I feel it is a little bit more intuitive but the Magellan 4040 does the same thing and after a small learning curve I am quite happy with this unit. I'll take all the extra features in exchange for the slightly easier to use Garmin. The Magellan Maestro 4040 is a great buy.

  • Good Looks and Works Well - Just Like It Should
    By A32YL5QP1BAZRD on 2008-10-25
This is my first GPS Navigation device and, overall, I am very pleased.

    What's included in the box:
    · Magellan Maestro 4040 (refurbished)
    · Basic cradle
    · Windshield mount and adhesive disc
    · Cigarette light power adapter (12-24 volts)
    · AC adapter
    · USB data cable
    · Protective pouch
    · Quick reference guide, reference manual on CD-ROM
    · SD Card with maps of U.S.A. (Lower 48 states, Alaska, Hawaii), Puerto Rico, and Canada

    Likes:
    · Immediate satellite signal acquisition (I haven't had an "acquiring signal" message.)
    · Announces street names and turns
    · A split screen with an arrow pointing the direction to turn when a turn is approaching
    · Very easy to understand female voice
    · Screen is easy to read in daylight. In direct sunlight, the screen could still be read albeit slightly washed out.
    · Touch screen allows map to be moved by pressing on the screen with a finger and dragging it across. This is great for when I want to see nearby or upcoming points of interests like food or fuel stations.
    · Auto Night Mode changes display to night mode automatically (under Map Options)
    · Points of interests gives you choices of restaurants, fuel stations, airports, and many more along the route and it is easy to detour to these destinations (just remember to cancel the side trip routing to resume the original route to the destination or the device will keep wanting to return you to the detour destination). If I'm traveling on the interstate, the device will provide the information by exit number, how many miles to the exit, and clicking roadside assistance provides the nearest city, ZIP code, two upcoming exits, and my current longitude and latitude coordinates.
    · Points of interests information provides not only addresses but also phone numbers but, for some reason, they are not in alphabetical order.
    · Estimated Time of Arrival (also see dislikes) and miles to destination

    Dislikes:
    · Routing was not always the quickest route even when "Fastest Route" was selected.
I used the Maestro 4040 for a 13-hour road trip and I have used it several times in town. For the long road trip, the device suggested routing using I-10 from Pensacola to Mobile to connect with Interstate 65. This route would add more than an hour than if I drove north on U.S. Highway 29, connected to Alabama 113, and then to I-65 near Flomaton, Alabama. While traveling north on U.S. 29, the device kept recalculating the route to get me on I-10. Finally, after about 30 minutes of traveling on U.S. 29, the device finally mapped the shorter, better route. In town, the device didn't know the shortcuts and preferred to use the main roads. I would have made it to my destination but the travel time would not have been the shortest. Still, a longer trip is better than being lost in an unfamiliar town.
    · Estimated Time of Arrival was not really accurate until I was about four hours from my destination (and this was on my 13+ hour road trip).
    · Volume adjustment could be a bit easier (it takes five touches of the screen to get to the volume control (the "Menu" button, a scroll button, selecting User Options, System Settings, and then finally the Volume button).
    · At an interstate exit, the Maestro 4040 seemed to get confused when many roads intersected but after I cleared this area, the device resumed providing correct navigation routing.

I haven't tried the other options of Shortest Distance, Least Use of Freeways, or Most Use of Freeways. There is an option to avoid toll roads too.

    Other observations:
    · Refurbished product has only a 90-day Warranty
    · Firmware version: 2.36 (the latest version as of October 2008)
    · Map Information:
    U.S.A./Canada
Basemap NavStreets and Detailed map NavStreets version: 27
    AAA data version: 21
I read somewhere this unit has maps from 2006 but I can't confirm that. New maps from Magellan cost $79.99.
    · Battery Life with full charge was 2 hours 55 minutes
    · Pronounced the abbreviation "hwy" as letters "h-w-y" not as "highway" while the entire state name was announced for abbreviations (i.e. "AL" was pronounced "Alabama").
    · Map options include 3D Map, 2D Map, Heading Up, and North Up. I prefer the 2D map and the Heading Up (map is oriented in the direction of travel).
    · I don't have a Bluetooth phone so I don't have any experience with this device feature.

    Final thoughts:
A GPS Navigation device does not take the place of an alert driver but the Magellan Maestro 4040 is a useful travel aid in an attractive, well-designed package that I can recommend.

  • Great product
    By A373MPFDBG4TWK on 2008-08-18
Got this refurbished as the deal of the day! Was a little skeptical but it has been great. I even use it on places I know how to get to just so I can see my estimated arrival time. Would highly recommend!

  • Cannot Ask for More!
    By A1G8PWTQGQ3QGF on 2008-10-08
I am one of those who do not use to believe in reviews since it depends on each's perception but off late I have been using review forums and have ended up on the right products. So I felt it is my obligation to return the favour. I bought this unit M 4040 from amazon (Refurbished). It came very quickly and started using it without any issues:
    PROS:
    1. Excellent Satellite reception inside my house and also I keep my GPS near my Gear box and do not have any problem with the reception.
    2. No freezing at all at any point.
    3. very clear voice instructions on upcoming truns with street names & exit names.
    4. Very clear screen and helpful views.
    5. Route algorithm is excellent(I tested it on some known routes)
    6. Excellently designed accessories. (Comes with complete Kit)

    Cons:
They updated the latest firmware but not the Map for a refurbished unit, but I am not disappointed as I knew what I was getting for the price under $100.

Overall: With little common sense this is a great unit to have and is excellent compared to Mio, Garmin & TomTom.

  • GPS
    By A1QBVUCTWP9XR4 on 2008-08-13
The Magellan Masetro GPS is convenient and portable for use. It makes driving to somewhere unfamiliar easy and less stressful. As I continue to explore its features I find it more and more helpful.

  • Poor Customer Service and Out of Date MAP... dont buy it
    By A13K7KVMOAX7Y4 on 2008-09-19
I purchased this unit FACTORY REFERB. After testing it out, I realiezed the MAP on the GPS is out of date 5+ years old. I called the Magellan Customer support and recevied the following e-mail.

    ******

We do regret to inform you, but we will not be able to provide the 2008/2009 free of charge as the unit is refurbished. Refurbished units are sold as is. Per our policy, we can only provide the map update free of charge (customer would be responsible for the $10.00 shipping charge for orders shipped with in the US or $26.00 for an international order) for new units purchased within the last 30 days. We do apologize for any inconvenience.

    ***
The GPS is bascially worthless without the updated MAP. I returned the unit immediately. DO NOT BUY IT!!!!!

  • Purchased 2 of them
    By A1CX8K51I8J4V on 2008-09-20
I purchased 2 of these, 1 of which I had to send back because it would not lock on the satellites, and the color was a bit off. The other one works perfectly. I downloaded the firmware update, and the AAA update from AAA and it works great. It is my first GPS, bluetooth works, but will not keep the connect information in the unit for some reason, but well worth the $100 I paid for it. Not sure if I will update the maps, it comes with 2006 maps, but have not run into many errors yet, we will have to see.

  • Great deal at the price

This GPS navigator proved easy to use quick to lock onto the satellites, quick to recalculate (often finished before we reached the end of the block after making a wrong turn!).

The voice instructions were very helpful, but the bell when the turn is reached could have come a bit sooner.

The maps are a little out of date, lacking some very recent changes, but this wasn't a big deal for me.

For under $150, this is a completely satisfactory gadget!

I will never take a trip without this again. It is the most valuable tool you can have in an area you are unfamilar with.
I bought the refurbished unit because it was very inexpensive. It came with every attachment I need, the mounts, plus wall and car chargers.
As it was a refurbished unit the maps were 2006 versions. I ordered the 2007/2008 map upgrade. It was difficult to install the maps, but now the unit is up to date and still was a bargin.

  • DO NOT BUY!! Bluetooth not working, wrong maps etc....
    By A2VKJIUJOZKJRI on 2008-10-04
    Such a waste of time...

First of all, the bluetooth is not working with all our phones and it's coming from this specific Magellan GPS unit, as all phones bluetooth work well.

But the worth part, the map is not accurate and the GPS sent us several times in the wrong direction, always a pleasure when it's late at night and you are travelling far from home, looking for your hotel with your kids...

After asking the customer services to send us an up to date map, they accepted at the beginning (but asked for 10 $ shipping that we were willing to pay), but then refused after we sent them the proof of purchase, when they saw it was a refurbished Magellan.

They also at the same time gave us a lecture about the fact that the new map is expensive because it's paid to an outside company, and reserved to new products only (resume : if you buy a bad product, you get bad customer services). Of course they think we are complete idiots, as those expenses are supposed to be covered in the making of the new GPS, so it's not really a big cost for them to use it to update an old one, as they already paid for it...how disgracefull!!
We are buying a refurbished unit to save money, I don't thing we deserve to be traited like that!
We paid real money for it but get Monopoly customer services!

What happen to those refurbished units if nobody buy it???
It's destroyed and it's a complet lost for the company...

    Anyway...

I'm sending back that GPS today, I do prefer our old TomTom GPS, never sent us to the wrong place, we need two GPS because we drive two cars, so we will just buy an other TomTom (plus their customer services are much nicer... really appreciated!!)

  • Amazing navigator value

This refurbished Maestro 4040 unit at $99 cannot be beat anywhere. I recently acquired it and have used it twice w/o any hitch. Magellan partners with AAA so the tourbooks can be updated via FREE downloads. Updated maps are $80 but I shall wait until I start to encounter any problems. The unit is full test to speech and the options for display, etc. should satisfy any typical users. Eventually I will try the Bluestone connection and so of the alternate mapping options.

  • Great GPS! Amazing Value!

I bought this GPS refurbished for $99. It was a great deal, considering the brand new price is a few hundred dollars. The unit is just as good as new. I can't tell that it was refurbished at all. If you are looking for a good deal on a GPS, buy this one!

Bought this refurb for ninety nine dollars. Works and looks as new. Updated the maps (yes it costs extra from Magellan!) Love it!
