Tom loves his life. Until he realizes he also loves his best friend hannah. But when hannah gets engaged to a dashing scotsman & asks him to be her maid of honor tom faces hostile bridesmaids bridal showers & bad hair days all in an effort to pull off the perfect wedding - and steal the bride! Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 02/24/2009 Starring: Patrick Dempsey Michelle Monaghan Run time: 101 minutes Rating: Pg13 Patrick Dempsey makes his full transition to romantic-comedy stardom in Made of Honor, flashing those winning dimples and twinkly baby blues to full fetching effect. The camera truly loves him, and his considerable affable charm calls to mind early Hugh Grant, winsome even in utter confusion. Dempsey plays Tom, a nice guy but a serial dater with a girlfriend in every zip code of New York; Michelle Monaghan is Hannah, Tom's BFF since college, who's decided she wants marriage and family. When she becomes unexpectedly engaged to Colin ( Journeyman's Kevin McKidd, rather McDreamy himself), Tom realizes what the viewer's known all along--that Hannah is in fact his dream woman. It's When Harry Met Sally... meets My Best Friend's Wedding--but thankfully, Dempsey's Tom is far more sympathetic than Julia Roberts' snide schemer. The plot isn't exactly full of surprises, but the cast--and their amazing chemistry--are so winning that the film makes for the perfect date movie. Not only are all three leads charming in their own way, but the rich cinematography manages to make both Manhattan and the Scottish countryside look like glorious edens, one urban, one windswept. Monaghan is a revelation, quietly lovely as a young Carla Bruni, but with a flinty gumption that makes her all the more appealing. The supporting cast is rich, too, especially Sydney Pollack as Tom's serially marrying dad. (At his dad's fifth--or is it sixth?--wedding, Tom's new arm-candy "stepmom" gets tipsy and overly affectionate with guests as her new husband looks on fondly: "Ah... drunk as the night I first met her.") But at the core of the film are its big heart, and the connection between Tom and Hannah, deep and wide whether they end up just best friends or more. And the delight for viewers is knowing they'll be just as glowy either way.-- A.T. Hurley Stills from Made of Honor (click for larger image)

My Best Friend's Wedding By A18G7GG53G2X8A on 2008-05-03
Don't you just hate it when the woman you secretly love gets engaged with another man? Tom (Patrick Dempsey) certainly does; he's been best friends with Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) ever since college, but only when another man proposes does Tom finally admit that he loves her. Now all he has to do is win her back. The idea behind "Made of Honor" is certainly classic as far as romantic comedies are concerned, which I guess is why the filmmakers stirred things up by making Dempsey's character the Maid of Honor. Then again, "stirred things up" might be too strong a term here; this movie is about as predictable and contrived as romantic comedies get, offering absolutely nothing new ... except, of course, for that whole male Maid of Honor thing. That, and a scene in which Hannah's grandmother wears a string of glow-in-the-dark sex beads, thinking it's a regular necklace. You certainly don't see that everyday.
The truth is that "Made of Honor" is no better and no worse than you expect it to be--you want a romantic comedy, you've got a romantic comedy. But if you want something more, something with greater depth of character and a few less one-liners, I'm afraid you'll have to keep looking. I won't go so far as to say that this movie is bad, but it definitely doesn't want to be anything other than Hollywood fluff with one or two over the top gags. I've repeatedly observed that romantic comedies never represent reality, but merely the illusion of happily ever after, and rest assured that "Made of Honor" is no exception to the rule. The problems with this film don't stem from an unrealistic plot filled with unrealistic characters; they stem from how ineffectively these unrealistic elements are used. You watch this film waiting for something new to surprise you, only to leave feeling as if you've been there and done that.
Still, there are worse films out there. I did smile more than once at the onscreen chemistry between Dempsey and Monaghan, chemistry so prominent that it seems unlikely their characters would act on their feelings so late in the relationship. Ten years ago, while still in college, Tom and Hannah met while he was dating her roommate. After a Halloween party, he snuck into Hannah's room wearing a Bill Clinton mask, believing her roommate was already there and waiting. Instead, he finds Hannah, who immediately sprays perfume into his eyes because she thinks he's an attacker. After flushing his eyes out in a water fountain, they strike up a conversation; Tom apparently believes that honesty is the best policy, especially for men who sleep around as much as he does. Hannah seems to find him charming, but she boldly asserts that she never sleeps with anyone like him.
In present day, Tom is the exact same womanizer he's always been. He's learned from the best; his father (Sidney Pollack) marries for the sixth time within the first thirty minutes of the film. Tom now follows a strict set of rules: never take any one woman on two consecutive dates, and wait at least twenty-four hours before calling someone new, because you'd seem desperate otherwise. How he maintains this lifestyle, I have no idea; what he does for a living is never alluded to, but his spacious Manhattan apartment hints at a decent salary. Be that as it may, he and Hannah--now an art historian--have been the best of friends ever since that fateful Halloween night. When she's called away to Scotland for six weeks, he begins to realize the affect she's had on his life; after all, the two have been virtually inseparable for ten years. Maybe he is in love with her. Maybe there's more to life than just sleeping with women (a concept his basketball buddies don't seem to understand, naturally).
Unfortunately, Tom gets the surprise of his life when Hannah returns to New York with her Scottish fiancé, Colin (Kevin McKidd), who's both a Duke and an owner of his family's whiskey distillery. Since Hannah knows that she would be Tom's Best Man at his wedding, she thinks it's fitting that he be her Maid of Honor. He begrudgingly takes on the role, believing he can somehow make her see that he's the right man, not Colin. As Tom plunges into the blatantly feminine world of wedding coordination and shower planning, he grapples with buried feelings, bad advice, and the wrath of Hannah's resentful cousin, Melissa (Busy Philipps).
The last twenty minutes of the story proper takes place in Scotland, where Hannah plans to live after the wedding. Naturally, this is when the romantic feelings between her and Tom finally begin to surface, and this, of course, creates more tension for that climactic moment when Tom rides a horse to the church and flies through the entrance. This is but one of many moments that sound funnier than they actually are. One of the film's most unnecessary side characters is a desperate nerd that tries to play basketball with Tom and his friends: How many times do they have to tell him no before he gets the idea? There's also a moment early on when Hannah is restoring a painting of a nude male; the movements of her head give the impression that she's giving the figure oral sex. The moment in and of itself is amusing, but it certainly doesn't work within the context of the story. But the biggest problem of "Made of Honor" is much more basic than a few inappropriate laughs--its formula is overused, a condition Dr. McDreamy can't even treat.
Just went to get away from the house--m By A3AVJCB1ZD6ZY5 on 2008-05-10
And a rainy day. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the film.
Tom (Dempsey) and Hannah (Monaghan) met at a Cornell costume bash 10 years before when a drunken Tom, dressed as President Clinton, stumbled into a dorm room and a girl's bed thinking he'd found "Monica". Turned out he'd gotten the wrong girl. "Monica" was Hannah's inebriated roomie.
They were friends from that moment, sharing Sundays, confidences, and desserts. Tom didn't know how much they shared til Hannah headed for Scotland and stayed gone six weeks. He was ready to propose when she came back, but she returned with a man, Colin (McKidd).
Hannah and Colin were going to be wed in Scotland in two weeks and Hannah couldn't think of anyone she wanted to be her Made of Honor more than her longtime best friend. Tom reluctantly accepted, secretly agreeing to become the best maid of honor and wreck the wedding.
What happens had me laughing until tears streamed down my face. I needed the break and "Made" defintely offered it. Tom hosting the wedding shower was a screamer--particularly when the jealous female friend who wanted to be the "MOH" set him up with a sex toy salesperson and Hannah's sweet Grandma ended up with a necklace of 'thunderbeads.' Then, of course, there was the Highland Games with Tom and Colin tacitly competing for Hannah's hand, Tom dressed in a mini kilt. (Nope, he wasn't dressed regimental--darn!)
Director Sydney Pollack showed up in a rare movie role as Tom's oft-wed Dad. The prenup agreement with Wife 5 (or was it 6, Dad can't remember) had me roaring. The car with the intended bride had to literally go around the block at the church to iron out last-minute details.
Plus, the scenery from Scotland was amazing. I recognized some places I'd been a few years before--and definitely remembered the flock of Hieland Coos stopping traffic on mainstreet.
The music was good, a mix of contemporary plus some old Scottish tunes. I notice there's no soundtrack available. I hope there will be one. It was a pretty decent collection.
The film's what you'd expect and yet, it's still entertaining. And, sometimes you just need something that's a gimme when it's a rainy day and a cheap laugh will lift a few clouds.

Crass, Unoriginal, Snarky, Unfunny By A2828HLP7LEXRQ on 2008-08-22
What do you get when you copy "My Best Friend's Wedding," take out all of the joy and originality, add in senseless sex jokes, crass story telling, unoriginal plot points and horrible shoddy filming as well as a thrown-together-cast of actors who seem to not tell where they are? Well, you get "Made of Honor."
Not only did this movie let my wife and me down, it offended, it ridiculed and it made us feel like we were foolish as a public, that we would lap up whatever drivel they threw together.
I'm sorry to say that Dempsey's charm couldn't save this train wreck of a movie. Did I mention how unfunny and unoriginal it was?
McDreamy + Recycled Script = Mediocre Romantic Comedy By AEP88AS6CRXEK on 2008-05-05
I don't have this filmmaker's cookbook handy, but I can pretty much assume the ingredients they used for this film.
1 Patrick Dempsey
1 Wedding Planner Script
1 My Best Friend's Wedding Script
1 Notting Hill Script
1 Very Pleasant Actress (Michelle Monaghan)
The result is a cliched mess. We've all seen this plot before. A thousand times before, to be honest. Of course, in those instances, the male lead was at least charming. That's not the case here, as Patrick Dempsey is about as likable as a thousand volts to the groin, even more annoying than his McDreamy persona from Grey's Anatomy.
The movie's only saving grace is the lovely Ms. Monaghan. She's every bit as agreeable here as she was in The Heartbreak Kid. The only difference is, in Heartbreak Kid, she had a skilled comedic actor to play off of. She and Dempsey have as much chemistry as two sweat socks. Monaghan tries her best, but she can't seem to muster up a reason for us to pull for her pairing with Dempsey's character.
I hope she finds a film project more beneficial to her talents... and that Patrick Dempsey stays away from the big screen. Far, far away.
Likeable Romantic Comedy By A91BK8S5QH98K on 2008-05-03
I saw this movie in the movie theater and was pleasantly surprised with how delightful it was. The theater was packed and by the end of the movie everyone was smiling and happy as the film leaves one with a very good feeling inside. It is unusual for a Romantic Comedy as the story centers around the guy more than the girl. However, this gives it all a fresh take on things. The scenes in Scotland are absolutley breathtaking. I definitely recommend it. It is great for a girls night out and a wonderful date night movie.
- Made for comedy chick flick
     By A126KX6FVI4T66 on 2008-05-15
As romances go , it is pretty good, but it really is so far from realism
that it borders on fantasy! The tall dark and handsome/ rich playboy
renounces his free bedding ways and trys to win his best friend.
Oh, sure when the north pole melts every summer?!
Most guys like him never reform and when they get married,
it is usually at the point of a shotgun.
But I enjoyed the Scottish wedding, which wasn't too new
afterFour Weddings and a Funeral.
We all want to meet that right person, but
this guy is just not the right type,
even in the dark...
- Why?!
     By A3NGHWCL97EQV7 on 2008-06-28
Uhmmm...this wasn't that great. As a matter of fact it was downright mediocre and predictable. Some of the acting was so-so even though I think they could have picked a better love interest/best friend. That chick's performance really didn't do it for me. It tried to be funny but I only managed to chuckle at the scene with the old grandma. On the flip side, at least Kadeem Hardison got a paycheck this time around because Lord knows I haven't seen him in anything that relevant since "A Different World". Other than that, I think that the director and the remaining cast and crew, with the exception of Patrick Dempsey and Kadeem Hardison, should all donate their paychecks to aid the cyclone victims in Myanmar. That would have been a better idea than producing such mediocre rubbish.
- Delightful Love Story
     By A3FY3H6F4249E0 on 2008-05-05
Just saw this one in the theater with my 15-year old granddaughter. We both loved it. I laughed my you-know-what off, (well-some of it anyway). Patrick Dempsey (Tom) and Michele Monahan (Hannah) had great screen chemistry.
They meet by accident. He is a ladies man and is coming to see her roomate. He likes Hannah, but she puts him in his place when he sneaks in her room and jumps in her bed with a Bill Clinton mask on, hollering "Monica!" I think she belted him, too. Fast-forward 10 years and Tom is still a ladies man, but he and Hannah are great friends. Tom's dad is marrying number 6 and always marries the "wrong woman". Tom takes Hannah to his dad's wedding. She starts to fall for him while they are dancing but he is so non-committal that she shrugs it off. When her work sends Hannah to Scotland for 6 weeks, Tom begins to realize he is in love. While Hannah is in Scotland, she meets the "perfect" guy who IS committal and asks her to marry him. Since Tom is her very best friend, Hannah returns from Scotland, springs the wedding plans on him, and asks him to be her Maid of Honor. Tom agrees so he can stay close to her and try to change her mind before he loses her forever.
The movie lasted about 1 3/4 hours and the time went fast. It was hysterically funny and an adorable love story. Yes, it IS a chick flick, so insensitive, beer drinking, belching and otherwise gassy guys beware.
- Great Comedy in years
     By AKDTJJE9TE3DS on 2008-05-28
I saw this film at the cinema and it was just great! The actors are very professional, convincing and the story very interesting since it portrays an undefined relationship between the bride and her best friend which leads to several funny and awkward situtations. Half of the film is played in Scotland, showing intriguing aspects of that country, including beautiful views and sights, as well as their social customs and traits. I will buy it on DVD definitely.
- Formulaic: Still, Charming On-Screen Chemistry Between the Stars
     By ABO2ZI2Y5DQ9T on 2008-08-15
Romantic chemistry between the two stars Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan almost makes up for the lack of originality in "Made of Honor," which looks like a cross between "My Best Friend's Wedding" and any romantic comedies made since "When Harry Met Sally..." Certainly the storyline is generic and predictable, and the gags are only mildly funny or just forgettable, but luckily the film has the charming performances from leads Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan, who play the two likable characters Tom and Hannah.
In "Made of Honor" Patrick Dempsey is Tom, a rich lady's man living comfortably in New York City. Tom realizes that Hannah, his best friend of long standing, is the right person for him only after she announces her engagement to Colin (Kevin McKidd), a handsome and good-natured Scottish aristocrat (this part reminds us of Hugh Grant and "Four Wedding and a Funeral").
The film could have used more effectively the unique situation of Tom, who is asked by Hannah to be her "maid of honor," but instead director Paul Weiland (who did a much better job in "Roseanna's Grave") relies on jokes and sight gags for comedic effect including a fat lady in her tight dress or an old lady wearing a "toy" that glows in the dark. None of them is really funny to me except Patrick Dempsey's plate juggling (he actually does). Tom is put in a situation like Julia Roberts' heroine in "My Best Friend's Wedding," but there is no memorable supporting character like Rupert Everett with his gentle humor.
It is hard to dislike "Made of Honor," just as it is hard to dislike Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan in this formulaic romantic comedy. They deserve a much better story than this, though.
- Ok , seriously.....

this should just be called a crappy version of MY BEST FRIENDS WEDDING except wait its really original because its got *GET THIS* a GUY instead of a girl for the Maid of Honor! OMG , hilarity must ensue...RIGHT??? wrong. dont bother. this should be in the 1.00 movie bin at walmart in a couple of months.....
- A stale, yet harmless trifle
     By A140XH16IKR4B0 on 2008-05-09
It would be easy to write a scathing review of "Made of Honor," but why bother? True, the film is horribly clichéd and unimaginative, but it is a harmless bit of fun. Tom and Hannah are pushing 30. They have known each other since their college days, when Tom, wearing a Bill Clinton mask at a Halloween party, mistakenly found himself in Hannah's dorm room, mistakenly thinking her to be a pliant "Monica." Over the years, the studly Tom has had countless casual relationships, but spends every Sunday with Hannah. The two are great and close friends, but not romantic. But when Tom learn that Hannah has found the perfect guy -- a rich and handsome Scottish lad named Colin, he panics. When Hannah makes him her "Maid" of Honor, he connives to use his access to the bride to try to win her.
The film has the makings of a screwball comedy, but doesn't really try to. There are a few fat jokes and gay jokes and Nellie jokes, but all are throwaway laughs. Patrick Dempsey is cute and heartsick as the randy Tom. Michelle Monaghan does fine as the smart Hannah, tired of waiting for marriage. The plot and the ending are predictable and unchallenging, including the standard lovers quarrel and messed-up wedding. A fine film if you really need to get your mind off your troubles for 101 minutes.
- Great Movie!
     By A596DPP52NHR0 on 2008-05-28
This film has similarities to My Best Friends Wedding but far surpasses it. I loved this film. It was funny, poignant and very entertaining. The message it sends is to follow your heart. The main character Tom has lived a carefree bachelor life spending his nights with a variety of women and then his off time with his best friend Hannah who he met in college. He has the best of both worlds until she leaves for Scotland. Then his world starts to crumble - it isn't the same without her - something is wrong. He realizes she means more to him than the other women in his life and wants to be with her. Unfortunately, she comes back engaged. He is stunned and even more so when she asks him to be her Maid of Honor. He reluctantly accepts hoping to get her to realize she should be with him. His friends try to help him with his project and it shows that he has some really good friends who want him to be happy. This is not an easy task to make her see him as a suitor. There comes a point when she does and she isn't sure she can rely on him so she is about to marry her fiance and Tom arrives in a dramatic fashion to declare his love for her before it is really too late. This is a romantic comedy told from the guy's perspective but I believe women and men will enjoy it and that was proven by my experience in the theatre. I cannot wait to own my own copy of it. Sydney Pollack is brilliant as the Tom's father.
- useless - why oh why do they still sell "fullscreen"???
     By A2L8M6H21MIJSC on 2008-08-05
I was one click away from ordering (surely the default issuance in this day & age is widescreen), but then I figured I'd better check.
Whaddya know??? This stupid version only comes in "fullscreen" (i.e. with the sides chopped off) - which on my TV means that do one of the following undesirable solutions - 1) I chop off yet more of the top & bottom of the picture, 2) distort the picture (make everyone look short & fat) to make it fit, or 3) watch a little picture in the middle of the screen with bright white bands on both sides (definitely a mood killer). Why would I pay $18 for that?????
Surely the number of non-wide screens still out there is dwindling sufficiently as to make this issuance mystifying . . .
Oh, and it's not that great a movie, but I do like the scenes of Scotland . . .
- As Romantic Comedies Go, This One Has it Made
     By A2I6MHMAZZDCRX on 2008-09-16
In college, Tom (Patrick Dempsey) was a lady's man. He slept with anyone who will have him. Sneaking into a room one night, he accidentally meets Hannah (Michelle Monaghan). Despite their less then great meeting, the two hit if off and become friends.
Flash forward 10 years, and little has changed. Tom spends every night with a different woman. And he spends all day hanging out with Hannah, who is now working for a museum. The two are close friends, but that is all.
Until one day when Hannah leaves on a six week trip to Scotland. It doesn't take Tom long to realize that he truly loves Hannah. In fact, the separation is killing him. He intends to act on his new found feelings as soon as she gets back.
But when Hannah returns, it is with Colin (Kevin McKidd) in tow. The two met in Scotland and are engaged. To further add to Tom's misery, Hannah asks him to be her maid of honor. Tom is reluctant, but decides he can break the wedding apart better from the inside. But with the ceremony only two weeks again, can Tom make Hannah fall for him?
So let's get the obvious out of the way first, the story is predictable. So, the movie is going to rise of fall based on how well everything else comes off.
And it comes off reasonably well. Hannah is likable from the start. I admit it took me a little while to warm up to Tom since I'm not a fan of cads. But as the movie progressed, I found it easy to root for him. In fact, I cared about the characters enough to get invested in the outcome.
And the story is funny. There are quite a few great moments that had me laughing, especially Tom's friends helping him learn how to be a maid of honor.
This movie is just an escapist romantic comedy. But that's all it wanted to be in the first place. If you keep that in mind going into it, you'll have a good time.
- Love or Friendship
     By AQL13WF76ZQQJ on 2008-09-18
Hannah and Tom are friends forever and when Hannah finds love and gets engaged to (Colin) she chooses her best friend Tom to be her Maid of Honor, yes a guy. He does everything he can to be the best maid of honor for his best friend until he reality sinks in and discovers what is wrong with the picture, then decided to bust up the marriage. Can their friendship hold together even when love is concerned? Can friendship turn into love and last forever? I rate this a 4 for the great friendship this pair have in the movie and also starring my favorite actor Patrick Dempsey. 2 thumbs up
- Great date movie!
     By AAU41YPXU53F2 on 2008-10-06
I can't believe all the low ratings for this movie! I liked it...it's not super original and it's very predictable but hey, it's a date movie. There's some funny moments and yes, it's a basic rehash of "My Best Friend's Wedding" but I think "Made of Honor" is better. I didn't really like "My Best Friend's Wedding" mainly because I didn't really like Julia Robert's character and there really wasn't any chemistry between her and her male co-star. I am a Dempsey fan (loved him in "Enchanted"...) and I thought Patrick Dempsey was very charming in "Made of Honor." I think the chemistry between him and Michelle Monaghan was great. It's a cute movie.
- Great Movie, Great Fun
     By A2RLWAW1KNHSUW on 2008-10-07
I watched this reluctantly at the insistence of my friend. As I sat with my arms folded in protest, I found myself more and more laughing and ultimately rooting for the characters' relationship, as well as the male lead. Side characters are funny as well...some forced moments, but overall fun. Unfold your arms and give it a shot...
- A lovely and fun date movie
     By A3M6RVUVZOQZLB on 2008-11-02
"Made of Honor" is a fine vehicle for the easy-on-the-eyes Patrick Dempsey, a veritable draw for female viewers. In the lead role he plays a promiscuous player with very strict rules which disallow emotional engagement. On the surface he is a pig but he plays the part charmingly. It really is difficult to imagine this refined man in such a role.
Michelle Monaghan, his co-star, plays his best friend of ten years (after a chance meeting in college when he was seeking his next conquest). They genuinely enjoy each other's company. Early on, her character shows a little secret through facial acting. This is more than friendship. The story will obviously lead to an open declaration of love. But how?
Hannah's museum sends her on an acquisition trip to Scotland, where she meets an incredibly eligible Scotsman, a man of wealth and royalty. Modern girl really does meet Prince Charming. When he knows he will lose his best friend, Tom (Dempsey) rethinks his relationship, especially after she asks him to be her maid of honor.
The rest of the movie is his quest to attain the lovely Hannah as HIS wife, not as the handsome Scotsman's. His friends advise him, her friends are there as fluff characters. After seeing the family in action, viewers know that this marriage cannot be. Of course, we already know they must "get" each other.
"Made of Honor" is an enjoyable way to spend one hour and 31 minutes. You won't learn any important lessons about life, but you will see some beautiful, rugged Scottish scenery. The summer castle that belongs to Colin's family is actually Eilean Donan, reported to be the most photographed castle in the British Isles because of its location. No one lives there as it is in possession of Scotland's Tourist Board (not sure of exact name) and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Scotland. (I've been there and helped it earn it photographic reputation!)
- It was playing at 2:15 . . .
     By A30TK6U7DNS82R on 2008-05-13
... so it was just perfect as I had a few hours to kill. The film is pleasant and wellmade up to a point, and I predict it will enjoy a long life on video, thanks to the appeal of the stars. Dempsey is an acquired taste all right, and I wouldn't cross the street to see him if he was giving away real estate, but a lot of people love him, and fans will get a lot of him here. Every shot of him is framed and lit in a way to suggest he is the most adorable man on earth, a way of thinking that perplexes the ordinary viewer, though I will give him credit here, he allows himself brief moments of looking like a clown when the script calls for it. There's the one sequence where, after a rousing basketball game he joins Kevin McKidd in the shower, his eyes straying to where McKidd's soaping himself up, over and over, high road and low road, and Dempsey panics. In the theater I was in, for the 2:15 show, this bit of male panic made everyone laugh. However Dempsey doesn't really seem like he's enjoying himself or even particularly invested in the script.
Michelle Monaghan works wonders with what she's got, though it's stretching to have her play the second part of the picture as though she's in love with the Scottish hunk, and she's only momentarily forgotten she's been in love with Dempsey since the era of Monica Lewinsky. It's a familiar storyline but it doesn't make it any easier to swallow. We just saw this story a few months back in PS I LOVE YOU when Hilary Swank was brought to mysterious Ireland to fall in love all over again, only now here it's Scotland.
The one who should get the Oscar next spring is the fellow who made Dempsey look 20 years old for the opening sequences of the picture. It can't be just makeup, it must be a blend of makeup and CGI, perhaps a stand-in? It is totally eerie and unworldly--what Freud called the "uncanny"--and sort of sets the tone for the rest of the film, the underlying attitude that says, he is a monster, but he's a loveable monster and he's ours.

- Maid of Honor...second best
     By A2NC9G399V3UF0 on 2008-09-15
The hype was high, and the expectations for this film were too. It's really too bad, the film did not live up to the initial press.
We have all seen this film before. My Best Friends Wedding, Three Men and a Little Lady, and other 'watch your best friend get married to someone else then confess your love just before the wedding in the church' film.
Patrick Dempsey portrays Tom, a man who has made his fortune on coffee hand protectors while Michelle Monahan plays the lovely Hannah. Friends to a fault, they go through 10 years of relationship building only to find out that she has been waiting for him to go further. While on an acquisitions trip she comes back with a man to whom she has fallen in love with.
Tom's friends are a motley bunch. They play basketball, poker, and swap their intimate serets right down to how they 'pleasure'. When Tom is named 'maid of honor', a joke that is repeated way too often, they are supportive (almost all), and help him prepare to win the girl back from the perfect Colin. He even goes trousseau shopping with her!
THis is a film that plays on the romance factor from Tom's denial of his love, and his willingness to do anything to win her. There is comedy as the bridal party travels to Scotland to the home of Colin and his whiskey making family and their american behaviour. But, as a film designed to elicit the response ASK HER TO MARRY YOU, it is cluttered with far too many sexual innuendos.
Ignore that and the fact that this film just might have been originally written for a female romantic lead, and you will enjoy it. Otherwise, watch Three Men and a Little Lady-it's cleaner.
- Cute movie, virtually no special features
     By A1C3BOKMM0WA95 on 2008-09-19
I enjoyed this movie when I saw it in the theater, enough so that I ordered the DVD. I'm not sure why other people are saying it's only a full-screen version, as my copy has the option to choose either wide screen or full screen. However, my big problem with this DVD, and the reason it only gets three stars from me, is the nearly total lack of special features. If I recall correctly (I'm writing this at work, and my copy is at home), they include only a bonus commentary audio track and the theatrical trailer. No featurettes, no cut scenes, nada. Wish I'd known this before I ordered, I could then have just TiVo'ed it from cable.
- Another Really Good Chick Flick!!!

On rare occasions, I watch movies like this. For this type of movie, it was really good! Tom meets Hannah at a college HALLOWEEN party. After 10 years, they become best friends. When Hannah goes to Scotland, Tom becomes lonely. When she comes back, she has become engaged to a man named Colin. Hannah asks Tom to be her 'Maid of honor' Tom only agrees because he tries to stop the wedding and get Hannah back. I really felt sorry for Tom, because you can tell that he really loves her, but doesn't know how to say it. If you love weddings, and comedies, you'll love MADE OF HONOR!!!
- "Just Say, 'No'" to Being "Maid of Honor"

Men sometimes have difficulty growing up. This is a premise that many women--even some men-- are embracing nowadays. It's an unfortunate fact but true. In various ways, women can be turned off, alienated, and hurt by what one author penned in his book title, 'The Peter Pan Syndrome: Men Who Have Never Grown Up'. Relationships and commitments are delayed, gratification becomes fleeting, but is often a foundational fact in men's lives.
Of course it isn't always true, and women and men often seek and find maturity from within and from others. Yet, you can't help be taken by how true 'Made of Honor' grasps at this concept.
Tom (Patrick Dempsey) is a serial ladies' man. He has looks and charisma, but his appetite is admittedly for "insatiable sports' sex". During college, he meets Hannah (Michelle Monaghan), who knows better than her counterparts that no one is going to use her casually and put her aside. Unlike her roommate, she holds out for what she wants. And what she gets is a relationship or at least a friendship with Tom.
Ten years later Hannah and Tom are still together. Tom is seemingly satisfied with his conquests. He must still be desirable, for he has at least one woman in his queue who is willing to follow his "no more than one date per week" rule. Hannah and he are pals. They go shopping and out for lunch and cheesecake like no macho men I know, but the casual acting suspends our disbelief. At this point and throughout the movie, I felt the film drew strong reminiscences from 'My Best Friend's Wedding,' an engaging film with a phony premise, but much of the operating procedure can be found here in a gender role reversal. Instead of Julia Roberts regretting her ex-lover pal getting engaged, it's Dempsey's turn.
How does he cope with it? Well, "absence makes the heart fonder". This cliché is actively used in many movies from the intrigue and intricacy of 'Closer (Superbit Edition),' where its sordid and interesting to most conventional movies you can think of. This time its closer to the latter. One of the more endearing aspects of `Made of Honor' is Tom's relationship with his father (here played by with warmth in a sunset role by the late Sydney Pollack). While Tom is a serial lover, Dad is a serial groom. In one scene together, he is negotiating a pre-nuptial agreement with his beautiful young bride, the sixth of his life.
When Hannah takes a business trip to Scotland, she meets the perfect man. Even before Tom's shock of meeting him upon her return, he is empty and missing her. He decides to change his priorities. Just like in 'My Best Friend's Wedding' where the buddy relationship is pulled into the engagement, it seems a bit contrived and implausible. Yes, ex-lovers are invited to weddings, but this time her lothario friend is chosen to be her maid of honor, an ignominious title, even the most sensitive male would find too much.
It makes for an interesting far-fetched set-up, and if it weren't for Dempsey's naturally casual performance, nearly matched by the supporting male cast, it could have been a disaster. With his basketball buddies we get the gamut of male talk, but it's Felix (Kadeem Hardison) who suggests he sabotage the nuptials from within. Now who do you know in the real world of men would say or do that?
The mixed blessing here is that the plot makes the deliberations new while it makes us incredulous. Can you imagine basketball buddies helping Tom make flowery gift baskets for a wedding shower? And it only speaks well for Dempsey's talent that he can make us believe the cattiness of Hannah's supporting friends who were passed up for a man. Yet, their private investigation of his rival, Colin (Kevin McKidd), a descendent of a Scottish Duke, works well enough to keep our eyes from rolling out of our heads.
In the end 'Made of Honor' is a likable, if not predictable film. It has as many rewards as it has drawbacks. It certainly helps that the cast and characters, except Colin's overbearing family, are likable enough and the performances aren't overwrought for some forced proceedings. I'm particularly partial to Monaghan's sweet reading of Hannah, and I find Dempsey, like Roberts before him, likable enough to empathize with his problems. I do think despite some of the preposterousness, some people--yes, especially women--will profit from this viewing experience. In the end I have to confess I hold affection for what I know is basically an average film. (Besides the title is a nice pun.)

Will not play in BDUP-5000. Blu-Ray is plagued with issues, ever changing standards, poor development of discs. If it does not play in a player you bought 6 months ago, then it is just plain garbage.

I absolutely loved this movie, it was so fun to watch! No it is not a really 'deep' movie, but sometimes we all need something light to watch.

I caught and ignored this in flight on way and back from China to visit my fiancee. Boring both ways. If it had to be made, it should've gone straight to DVD (why Blu-ray?). Sidney Pollack must have had some free time. Typical unbelievable characters--a short Yao Ming this Dempsey with Don Johnson/George Michael stubble! Monaghan, as usual, looks adorable. I took off my headphones after a few minutes on the way, and left them off on the way back. On the other hand, my love story is so beautiful, it could and should be made into a movie directed by Yimou Zhang--romantic comedy, not martial arts fantasy. No exagerating. Ask our friends and family. Skip Made of Honor and wait for HuNan Love.

I am really disappointed in this. I have updated my blue ray player and I still can't get this to play. If they are going to be making blue rays like this, then I'll be switching back to DVD. I've probably spent more time trying to get this thing to play, then it would have taken me to watch it.
