Asus Eee PC 1000H - A Reality Check By A1LR22NDF2UPLT on 2008-08-11
Some of the reviews for these mini notebook computers just amaze me. People want to see everything under the sun added to them and yet pay the same price! Or they want $1,500 to $2,000 laptop quality embedded in these little wonders. Get real. The computers marketed by Asus and others are geared into a specific price point in order to make "portable" computing more available to everyone along with functionality that allows you to be productive when you don't have either your supercharged desktop or high-priced 15" or 17" laptop with you. And they have succeeded at this admirably. So, keep your expectations reasonable and you won't be disappointed. Sheesh!
If you check around, there are vendors selling the PC 1000H for lower prices than what is showing here to-date on Amazon (around $549 - in stock).
I received my 1000H on August 5. The screen is of sufficient size and resolution for even the most optically-challenged individuals. No dead pixels. The keyboard is nearly full size so you can touch type on it. Although this little guy is somewhat heavier than other minis, you get a whopping 6 cell battery that can give you up to 7 hours of computing when the power saving features are activated. So, is that an adequate trade-off for the added weight? Yes! With the power saving features off and running the computer full bore, I still get over 4 hours on a full charge (a lot better than my 14" Acer that can't even provide 2 hours). The wireless (internet) works like a charm - exactly as advertised (even with my WPA security-enabled network). I've had no problems with it, and sensitivity is very good. The 80GB HD is more than adequate for this mini, and the speed of the system with the Win XP OS is just fine and provides me with a fully compatible system (with my other laptops and desktop). Yes, the 1000H (and other mini-notebooks) don't come with DVD/CD drives, but keep in mind the cost factor. Also, why do you really need an internal DVD drive with such a system (if you don't watch movies)? You can load all your programs into this little wonder with an external DVD drive at home. I take along 2 or 4 GB flash (jump) USB drives to upload or save files. And, if you do need a DVD drive with you, just get one of the portable USB drives (Sony makes a great one). They are not that cumbersome.
Looks like Asus listens to other reviewers and continuously tweaks their models. I do not have the keyboard flex that others have complained about, nor the clicking keys. And the 1000H runs incredibly quiet for a system with a hard drive. I barely hear it. There were complaints about a noisy or clunking hard drive, but it's not a problem with mine! And, on top of all that, my mini does not run hot (as some have mentioned). It runs warm, as is typical for notebook computers. The Intel Atom processor seems to be doing its job, and doing it well. And the build is better than I expected for this computer at this price point.
I have no concerns with this mini notebook, and can recommend it without reservation. Take the plunge!
I love this thing! By A2XEVM311YJJGF on 2008-09-01
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R10T5INT52EQLC Great machine. Very happy with it. It is powerful enough for a computer programmer to run software that usually requires quite a bit of power and resources.

Great Netbook for Road Warriors! By A100VLQFXZKLI7 on 2008-07-30
So I purchased this Asus Eee 1000H model in black at an electronics chain store in Taipei, Taiwan. I believe the local prices are slightly cheaper than the US retail price, but not by much. Don't worry.
I'm a MAC enthusiast. I currently own the regular MacBook and do all my hardcore writing on it. But when I travel to meetings or conferences, I needed a smaller laptop. Yeah, Apple's 12" macbook is still too bulky imo. I'm female and with 3 inch heels, every little pound counts! Besides, other than my regular handbag, I hate to carry an additional laptop bag. So Eee was my best bet.
I looked around similar offerings by HP, Dell, and Acer. For the specs, price, and the roomy enough 10" screen, I opted for Asus.
Did consider MacAir, but it's just too expensive right now, and I'm waiting for the 2nd generation to roll out with glitches fixed.
10" screen is the smallest I can go, because with smaller Eee models, I can't type without making a ton of mistakes and doing so hurts my hands.
The power up speed is extremely fast. Love Windows XP. This model comes with Microsoft Work, not Office. But for basic writing, and excel I don't mind Works.
Connects to my broadband in a heartbeat, detects wireless networks too.
The aesthetics is great. I love it in black. White can get dirty too easily. Yes, it does accumulate fingerprints, but you can easily wipe it down with the cloth they've included in the package.
Powerful, flexible, inexpensive, little unit. I love it, and it comes with a black microfiber sleeve to store your Eee inside your bigger carryon.
Great for kids too.
But for handsome 6 feet tall 200 pound men, I suspect not too suitable! =)
Lean and mean By A3NNM295B5M7T3 on 2008-08-06
I travel a lot and over the past few years I have been on a quest for a laptop that was small enough not to be hassle to drag around (which for me means 12" wide or smaller, and 4 lbs or less), but was also fully functional. I need a gig of RAM to run the graphics programs I use, and 40 gigs of storage is not enough anymore.
I have used a series of ever-smaller laptops from Gateway and Dell, but I really, really like this little Asus. I have a little satchel that I use when I go in the field, which is designed to hold maps and a compass. It's a small satchel--you can't fit a normal-sized magazine in without it bending. And yet the Eee fits inside (just barely).
How small is it? It can sit on an 8.5x11 piece of paper without overhanging the edges. The keyboard is big enough that it doesn't impair my typing. The 1024x600 screen takes a little getting used to--the other little laptops I've used have been 1200x800. Still, for me the slightly smaller screen is a fair trade for the improvement in portability.
I can see how a lot of people wouldn't like this machine because it's too small. Most of my friends think I'm crazy, but I look at their 8-pound monsters with screens almost a foot and a half wide, and all I can think about is what a pain those must be to take on an airplane.
So far I haven't had any performance problems at all. There is a faint hum from the hard drive fan, which probably only jumps out at me because my last laptop had a fan-less solid-state drive, which is silent. I doubt if it is something most people will notice; it's no louder than other fan-equipped laptops I've used. The built in megapixel webcam is a nice touch in a machine this small. The speakers are great, too.
I prefer to use open-source software, so the first thing I did was get online (it detected and connected to my home Wifi immediately and with no problems) and download Firefox and OpenOffice. I moved my files over from my external hard drive, and in an hour I was fully up and running with everything I need. Eee stands for "easy, excellent, and exciting"; I think Asus has achieved all three with this little gem.
Some Tips By A2JCEJAE2CCWSL on 2008-08-29
I have this notebook for about a week. I love it. It is tiny and you can always carry it around in your handbag. I am a researcher and three main programs that I use are MS office, Acrobat Reader and statistical analyses software (such as SPSS). The computer has no problems running those and performs well. It is great to have everything you need on the go.
As you probably know, it doesn't have a DVD drive. If you already have a desktop computer, then you don't need to buy an external DVD. Just setup a small home/office network from your desktop computer (you can do it with a few steps in Windows). Then open your DVD drive to sharing by right clicking on your DVD drive under "My computer" and choosing share. Next, from your laptop connect to your home wireless internet.Change Workgroup of your laptop to the same workgroup name you assigned while setting up home/office network. Then you would be able to see and access the shared folders on your desktop PC from your notebook. You can also use your PC's DVD drive to install programs. After you are done you can turn off sharing your DVD drive.
Secondly, the laptop has an automatic power saving mode when you unplug it, however unlike my previous laptop, it doesn't adjust the brightness. My old laptop would go dim to save power while running on batteries. Don't just assume that ASUS does it automatically because it doesn't. Mine came with the highest brightest setting,so make sure to adjust it manually if you want the batteries to last more.
Lastly, if you are going to run several programs at the same time, just buy and install a 2GB ram, which will cost less than $40 as of now. XP runs great with 2GB and it is worth it. What you need is a 2GB 667 Mhz SoDIMM module like this one OCZ 2GB PC2-5400 667MHz DDR2 Value SoDIMM Module (OCZ2MV6672G).
- Portable and Usable
     By A1Y85GQ09Y95JL on 2008-08-18
The Asus EEE PC 1000h really lives up to the hype as usable well designed netbook. I have been using it at the office on the road and even in bed with for a week now. It has a really wonderful keyboard that I can actually type on comfortably. Seriously, I'm not the greatest typist but it's nice not to have to look at you fingers while you're typing an email. Generally the key are in the right place including the FN key. The battery life is also most satisfactory. I get about 3-4 hours surfing the net with the screen turned down to a low but readable level and the power saver on. With the screen down, the wireless off and the power saver on, the meter was reporting about 6.5 hours of use which is great! If get a better hard drive, it might get up to 8 hours. It also sips power when in sleep mode so I don't mind leaving it running when I walk away from it.
The screen is very readable for a 40+ person and gets more than sufficiently bright for indoor use. I have it set to just above 1/2 way most of the time. Admittedly I'm not crazy about the 1240x600 screen dimensions considering many web pages are designed for 1240x800. On the plus side, it is very easy to view from many angles and the contrast is surprising for such a budget computer. I haven't tried editing photographs on it yet, but am betting that it would do as well as any other lap top I've owned to date.
One of the great things about this budget computer is the access door on the bottom. Turning 2 screws gives you access to both the RAM and the hard drive Assembly. I replaced the memory with a 2gb OZC chip and it made a huge difference! A freeware benchmark program jumped from an 80 to 135 putting it in line with the full size $1000+ Toshiba that I purchased less than a year ago. Honestly, they perform tasks about equally as well even thought the Asus is nearly 2 LB lighter and runs 1-3 hours longer on battery that the Toshiba. I will probably upgrade the drive within a month or two once I decide on the new Hitachi hard drive or the OCZ solid state drive. Ether way, it's only a matter of a couple 4 screws and the just slipping it in; no cables, no adapters, no jumpers, no fuss! Last, is the touch pad which is a bit of a disappointment. It works great as a mouse pointer but is not very good for scrolling. The touch pad on my Toshiba is far superior with the scrolling on the right and bottom - way easier to use. For extended periods I use a Kennsington Slimblade mouse which worked within seconds of first being plugged in. Overall I'm very satisfied with the computer and will probably end up selling the Toshiba on eBay.

- The Perfect Mini Laptop
     By AQ6XS10RR7CE0 on 2008-08-17
I have had the the eee pc 701 and 900 and the Msi Wind. The quality is excellent. Yes, the case does get finger prints. The screen is amazing. It is bright even on battery power. The system is powerful and runs fast. I put in a 2g memory card and it flys. I am also a Linux user. The problem is the wifi drivers do not yet work with Linux. But since the xp model is $150 cheaper then the Linux model, I could not justify the cost. I dual boot into Ubuntu and I have a Linksys USB wireless-g adapter that works fine in Linux. Thus my 1000H, runs both. The system is really nice. The keyboard is perfect and screen size is just right. Things to consider, the sleeve that Asus gives you is terrible, upgrading to 2g is easy and under $50 via Amazon. The 1000h is just as nice as the Wind, but, the Wind does not allow you to upgrade and not void the warranty. The Wind also had a 3 cell battery and the 1000H has a 6 cell. It does not last 7 hours, more like 4. It is a wonderful system. For those who want to boot of an external device, it "F2" before you see the windows banner. It boots very fast, and if you are not watching it will pass the bios.
- Affordable light weight / featured packed mini notebook is not an oxymoron
     By A35WUHB06DVN2T on 2008-08-14
I have been looking forever for a light weight / featured packed mini notebook w/ a reasonable price and good to great battery life. I wanted something that would allow me to surf the net while lounging in my patio, check e-mails at wifi hotspots, stream some Hulu or Netflix in the kitchen while doing dishes, take on overnight business trips and watch movies on an airplane, and carry to the coffee shop w/o breaking a sweat. Asus finally built the mini notebook I was looking for.
It's amazing how many features are packed into the 1000h. Pessimist's will immediately point out that you can find a much more featured laptop packed for $549. Yes, but try to find one that squeezes Windows XP, SDHC card reader, wireless N, 80 gb storage, a power efficient Intel processor, bluetooth, 1.3 mp webcam, all into a pint size 3 lb package. On top of that add a real world battery life of 5 hrs. I can't think of any other alternatives than maybe an MSI Wind.
Anyways, I'll cut to the chase. What are the +'s and -'s?
+'s
1. Battery life- 4 to 5 real hours, not paper hours. Heck, that's better than my portable dvd player.
2. Compact size and weight- About the size of my 10" portable DVD player, but about twice the weight.
3. Build quality- Overall very solid, sturdy metal screen hinges, nice glossy plastic used on the shell, minimal body flex, no jiggle in the battery connectors.
4. LCD screen-Sharp, bright, no light leakage from the ends and no dead pixels
5. Extra touches- Bluetooth, 1.3 mp web cam, 3 usb ports, and a SD card reader. Asus could have easily skimped on any of these, but it's nice to see a laptop maker that doesn't nickel and dime.
6. Overall performance- This one was very surprising. The 1000H is very snappy. XP load time is silly fast and overall performance is very good for a mini notebook. This thing will probably rock w/ 2gb of RAM.
7. LCD off button- What a friggin ingenious idea ! Why the heck doesn't every laptop come with this. I don't need the LCD on when I want to listen to podcasts or stream music.
-'s
1. Fan- The fan is a bit noisy when run at full speed, but is acceptable when the processor is set to "max battery life".
2. Keyboard- Exhibits no flex, but tactile response could be better
3. Slip cover- Included is a zippered cover, but it should include a separate compartment for the power adapter.
4. Fingerprints- The black gloss really shows finger prints, but at least Asus includes a micro fiber cloth to wipe them off.
It is really hard to complain about this product. Most people complaining do not understand that this mini notebook was not intended to compete with full size laptops and should also keep in mind the $549 price tag. Like some other reviewer's I am a die hard Apple Mac fan and swore I would never buy another Windows machine. However, pigs will fly when Apple builds any type of laptop for $549. The Asus 1000H is perfect for anyone looking for a truly portable computing experience and is currently the creme de la creme of mini notebooks under $600.
- If you're in the market for a netbook NOW, get the 1000H. NOW!
     By A21TYNTV680SAH on 2008-08-13
BUYING EXPERIENCE: first off, i bought my 1000H through an amazon seller, Beach Camera. the only sad part about it was, 3 days after i ordered it, the price dropped by $100. EVERYWHERE! i requested for a price match/adjustment from them, alas, they are not able to accommodate such a request (the only option given was to return item by refusing the delivery. that was it). i'm normally a Best Buy / Circuit City patron. and for an item like this, i think i'm better off buying from the big guys (or from amazon directly) as they are able to accommodate such requests and adjustments. from order to delivery, it took a full 11 days for fulfillment. if it weren't for the tasty product that i'd be unveiling, i'd be refusing and returning the item ordered.
that said... how's the 1000H?
if you MUST HAVE A NETBOOK NOW, GO FOR THE 1000H.
THE GOOD:
1. Size / Weight - i've seen the 900s at BB, they're too small for me. yes. this is the perfect compromise between a 7incher and a 12incher if mobility is your issue. weight is ideal, it won't break your back!
i have been travelling all over the country this year for almost 12x now. believe me, it's such a thrill to finally be free from the heavy 14" and 15.4" laptops i have been carrying (notwithstanding the fact that you have to bring it out of your bag, and put it back again, whenever you pass by airport x-rays).
in fact, i'll be travelling again tomorrow, and i am very excited to be lugging this lil baby with me!
my take on the size of the 1000H? the eeepc has finally grown up.
2. Looks - very very professional, very attractive. for the working class, this lil guy means business. it has an "i'm not a toy" attitude to it.
as people have commented before me, yes, glossy finish = fingerprint magnet. good thing it does not scratch easily. i can live with that. wiping the lid should be the normal routine after using your 1000H.
3. Storage - 80GB of old-school hard drive for me. am not too hot about SSD model (20gb SSD on the 1000?). i don't notice any performance hit to the system anyway. the more, the merrier for me. (in fact, i always have a portable HDD with me, a 320 WD passport, which pairs perfectly well with the 1000H).
4. RAM - on-board 1GB provides good perforamance already. the process of upgrading to 2GB is so easy, you can do it in less than 5min. did it, do it! with 2gb, you won't need your virtual memory anymore - disable it, and add a bit of speed to your eee.
5. Running Prorams - i uninstalled programs that came with it (ie OfficeStar, Works, etc), and installed the usual stuff i need (iTunes, quicktime, Explorer7, Media Player 11, YM, Office 2007, Photoshop Elements 6) all of them running perfectly well.
i don't heavily play games on my computer anymore (IMHO, that's best left to the Xboxes and PS3s of this world). oh, but the ones that reside in my eee? Zuma (and i'll try installing the retro Sierra On-Line adventure games of old, and see how it fares) hehe
6. Brightness - albeit it's matte (i prefer the glossy screens), the screen ilicits impressive levels of brightness. can't complain in this area.
7. Keyboard - size is close to a regular keyboard, so my fast fingers are waltzing all over it (i can never type on the first gen Eees)! be forewarned though, i read in varous forums that some reported flexing on their keyboard. might be a case of loose adhesive under it which some people remedied on their own. but if you experience this and don't want to tinker with your eee, send it back. mine was flex-free though.
8. Touch Pad - you can always buy a bluetooth mouse (to save on the USB slots), or be content with the touchpad which is not a bad thing. tapping on it functions as the left/right buttons, and with 2-finger scrolling. you hardly will use the buttons at all. i have yet to discover the gestures you can do with it (ala Mac).
9. Battery - haven't really tested it thoroughly, but it lasted me 2 hours+ on my first night with it, with 'round 60% of battery life to it.
not bad.
10. It's quiet! - you practically don't hear anything (ie fan, HDD). so if you get yours and you get the slightest annoyance of hearing the fan blowing, or the HDD's parts moving? return it. that should not be the case. oh, and it runs fairly cool too, certainly, not a lap-burner!
11. Intel Atom CPU (the latest, battery-efficient), Bluetooth, Wifi, Ethernet connection, 3 USB 2.0, 1 SD slot, VGA port (still perfect for presentations using projectors!), an ok 1.3MP webcam, the Asus Super Hybrid Engine (for easy adjustment of power consumption modes). what else can i say?!
THE BAD:
1. Gloss - might be a turn-off for some, as it becomes a canvass of thumbprints after a while. as i've said, i can live with that. oh, and i ordered a leather case from pdair (dot com) anyway.
2. Screen Size - although it ain't distracting, bezel around the screen is such a waste of space! they could've added more screen size to it, i'd be an inch happier.
3. Resolution - of which, you have 4 dafault options (by using the Resolution Key on the keyboard): 800x600 - naahhh, too low and the screen appears a bit stretched. 1024x768 - naahhh, you wouldn't want to be scrolling vertically/horizontally to see the entire screen. 1024x768compressed - hohumm, you do get the entire screen, but again, a bit stretched, to fit. so the REAL option really is the 1024x600 where everything is in its correct proportions. be ready to tinker with your icon and font sizes though, as they'd appear too large on your desktop and windows.
4. Touchpad Buttons (left & right) - TOO STIFF! good thing the touchpad accomplishes the tasks provided by the buttons. in time i guess (with much patience and repeated use), it'll come to a comfortable clicking level.
5. The sleeve - out of the box, it comes with a nice-looking black zippered sleeeve, that to me, is enough as a carrying case for the eee (as you stow the entire thing in your bag). the material is such a dust and lint magnet though!
THE UGLY:
1. EeePC typeface - this is already nitpicking. but the makers should invest more on logo design!
THE VERDICT:
again, if you must have a good performing netbook NOW, the Eeepc1000H is the only game in town.
but if you still can WAIT, check out the 1000H contenders coming from Dell and Lenovo before getting this asus (from the pics i've seen, they're very nice to the eyes!). do extensive research on the current contenders from MSI, Acer, etc. then, make your decision. the deluge of new netbooks coming from the big brands will happen before the year ends anyway.
but as it stands, i think the 1000H has set the current benchmark. it's either the new players match its features and offer it at a lower price point. or exceed its features at an acceptable price.
competition is good. we, happier (wink wink)!

     By AGVVIT1FKTBKO on 2008-09-07
This is a beautiful computer. It has a shiny, smooth, black case that is much more attractive than I thought it would be. It boots up om less than a minute and you're ready to go.
On the downside, the keyboard is very small, but this wouldn't be a problem if the touch pad weren't so sensitive. You must constantly watch the screen when you're typing or else you'll lose track of the cursor. I use a wireless mouse, but when using a mouse the touch pad does not disable. This is more of a problem than you might think. You have to be very careful when you're typing. XP works well and Works has a great word processor. I tried to download Norton, but I kept getting a message that it won't work with this version of XP. For the Internet, I downloaded Firefox. However Forefox and Explorer drop out very once in a while. You'll be in the middle of a search, and suddenly you're back to your desktop. I got the six cell battery and I'd guess the real life using the word processor is about 4.5 hours, but I haven't run it completely out.
All in all, I love this computer. I bought it to write out on the road and, for that purpose it works great. The next time I buy one, however, I will opt for a larger keyboard, and a disabled touch pad.
- The greatest laptop ever
     By A3H6MEZHN1NB2W on 2008-08-01
Ordered the eee pc 1000h from ebay, got it on 7/25.
Having played with it for almost a week now, i can safely write something for this little wonder.
Originally I was planning to buy the msi wind because the 6 cell wind has very similar configuration as eee1000h, but it was 150 dollars less expensive(6cell wind $499 vs. eee1000h $649). Later on msi announced 6cell wind won't be available until late august/early september due to battery shortage, and eee1000h price was reduced by $100. Since eee pc series already have pretty good track record and msi wind is relatively new, I made a quick decision: placed an order on ebay and never regretted my choice since then.
The eee1000h comes with windows xp home sp3. Booting takes about 30 seconds. LED screen is pretty bright. Basically I can get very good lighting when brightness is set to about 30%. It comes with two partitions, 40GB each. After charging the battery, the first thing I wanted to do is to install ubuntu hardy 8.04 on the second partition and set up dual booting. I messed up with disk partition the first time, so I decided to try the recovery dvd. Man, the recovery is FAST! believe it or not, it took only 4 minutes 30 seconds to recover to factory pre-installed state. At first the ethernet and wireless didn't work under ubuntu. After fixing the drivers(credits to http://ubuntu-eee.com/index.php5?title=EeePC_901),
everything worked perfectly(except Fn keys, only brightness control works under ubuntu, but I can live with it). One thing i noticed is that ubuntu seems to be more powering consuming than windows xp. With xp, my battery shows 6h 35m at 100% when doing nothing, with brightness 30%, wifi on and bluetooth off. With ubuntu, the same condition shows only 4h 18m. I guess that has something to do with xorg/compiz always running in the background. The keyboard feels pretty responsive, I can type really fast on the keyboard. The CPU is powerfull yet very quiet. It doesn't get so warm as previous eee pc series. The lid hinge is sturdy and the black ebony case feels solid, although it gets my finger print very easily.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. Greatest laptop ever!!
- Great value - great wow factor
     By A3HURP1YDP14QL on 2008-08-17
I am typing this review on my new 1000h. The keyboard feels almost as big as a regular laptop keyboard. It is comfortable to type on. For web browsing, 1024x600 resolution is sufficient. The built in webcam, the long batter life, and the light weight makes this ultra portable laptop well worth the $550 it cost to purchase.
You will want to upgrade the stock 1gb of ram to the max 2gb for $40.
Boot time is fast, and the ATOM processor seems fast too. Great buy for students and travelers!

pros: ?
cons: screen is too small and looks dirty. very bright, but not sharp. it weighs too much for a portable labtop. good construction and battery life, but too heavy for grab and go lifestyle. very delicate in appearance!
i really wanted to like this laptop, but there wasnt enough pros for me to keep it. i sent it back to amazon, will follow up soon with a customer service review.
many thanks, take care.
UPDATE. excellent customer service from amazon.com they refunded my money with no issues! many thanks.
- WOW!...BUT
     By A1602WP8OHESZD on 2008-08-11
I admit ive only had this mini-notebook computer for less than a week, but i am very impressed. first amazon should correct the advertising on their page. the notebook has NO MODEM. the documentation says it comes with a modem, but it doesnt. i am currently waiting for a us robotics usb modem, then i will go online and surf with it. performance is good,it boots less than 30 seconds, even some of the installed apps launch fast, speaker sound is pretty good. good for may things, surfing the web, email, word processing, webcam chatting,Not for games or video editing, touchpad is exceptionally sensative. the pros are size, speed, wifi, lan, bluetooth. excellent battery life. the cons are: intergrated graphics with shared memory, three usb ports,no internal modem, and no cd-rom drive. which means you must carry a cd-rom drive alond with other accessories. lke mouse,mousepad,cd-rom drive and modem. plus finding a carry case that will hold all of it,and not make the notebook move around inside. i hope someone will make a carry case designed for the EEE 1000H. and that Asus will eventually come out wit the power edition with dedicated graphics, more memory, dual core cpu,and a modem with more than three usb ports.
- Awful Keyboard
     By A38343TLUJWYEF on 2008-08-16
The keyboard on the Asus 1000 received today is abysmal. The whole keyboard sinks with each keystroke. It feels like the keyboard underlay is made of cardboard. I immediately repackaged the computer and sought the reseller's instructions for return.
Please note that I have NEVER sent anything back to an internet seller. It's too much hassle.
This product, however, failed to come close to it's stated purpose (typing), and I will go through the time and effort of seeking recourse.
This might have been a 'first batch' product, in which case I will gladly wait for a replacement. I have gone so far as to suggest to the Amazon reseller that if the Linux product has a better keyboard, I would pay any increase in cost (within reason) and order it.
The reseller's name has been withheld, and I hope this purchase has a 'happy ending'.

Let me start by saying that overall, I love it!
Now I'll give you a little more insight on it. The screen is just right once you place it in 1024 x 768 compressed resolution. However, It can handle up to 1920 x 1080 if you don't mind scrolling your desktop and it isn't recommended.
Overall it's performance is adequate. I have not tested it for any games, but it isn't designed for that. It also seems to be easy to upgrade as the back panel reveals the hard drive and memory.
The only reason I have given it 4 out 5 stars is because its battery life is 4-4.5 hours and not 7 hours as advertised. Perhaps they are referring to the solid state drive version. One may be able to squeeze a little more by lowering screen brightness and playing with other settings but realistically most people plug their laptops in so it may prove not to be an issue for you. The other slight draw back is that you need to purchase an external CD/DVD drive. However, this is not a requirement.
My final thoughts is that Asus has managed to squeeze alot of computer into a small package. Make no mistake this mini is no toy. Of course it would be easy for die-hard enthusiast to pick on this mini-laptop apart. but over all , "They done good" and the price is just right.
- Great Mini-Notebook
     By AXIIQYEQ3W4G0 on 2008-08-28
I would describe this as more of a mini notebook than a netbook.
Good-
1. With 6 cell battery, 5+ hours of work time
2. Very small power brick
3. Compared to other netbooks, keyboard is roomy. Unlike some other reviewers, mine has no keyboard flex.
4. Touchpad and button setup nicer than other netbooks I have tried.
5. WinXP better than Vista
6. Wifi range seems good. Comes with N, but I've only used G.
7. 80gb drive is roomy. Not SSD is negative.
8. Nice screen
9. Bluetooth
Bad-
1. Shiny- get used to fingerprints. I don't know why they can't make these things matte.
2. Compared to other netbooks, this is pretty thick and heavy. If you are looking for more of a net appliance, look elsewhere.
3. Pricey- but they seem to be coming down.
This is a great little PC, but might be on the verge of being too big to be something you always carry with you- I would go for the 9" models for that. I would imagine if someone wanted a small laptop (12-13" screen) but didn't want want to spend the money this would be a great alternative.
- Disappointed
     By A2OHYAZ6BH982I on 2008-09-04
I was disappointed with this product. The 1000H looks so cute and sounds so good. I had considered several netbooks and selected this one because of the specs and because I had previously owned an Asus 7" Surf and loved it. I booted the 1000H up and the poor screen resolution stopped me in my tracks.
Font displayed blurry and fuzzy. Looking at the screen and trying to read really bothered me. I've used pcs/laptops from a number of different brands, everything from Averatec to Gateway to HP, but I've never seen a screen where text is so hard to read and so uncomfortable to look at.
I spent a good bit of time browsing the alarming large section of Eee User forum that dealt with issues people were having. I made note of all info relating to my own issue which turned out to software rather than hardware. After implementing all recommended changes, downloads, etc and adding a few tweaks of my own. I now have a screen that I can use, but it's not as good as other pcs that I've used. I still strongly feel that some as basic as this shouldn't require extensive tweaking to be usable.
I agree with one of the other reviews who disliked the keyboard. Mine feels 'delicate' as if it might easily fall apart. It doesn't have a good typing feel. While the size of the keyboard is bigger than on the 7" Surf, the buttons seem too small to me and I wear a small to XS glove size. On the whole, the Surf felt more solidly built. It also required no tweaking and had excellent screen display compared to the 1000H.
As some reviewers noted the cover is of the kind that smudges easily and Asus does provide a wipe. I intend to purchase a skin for it as the simplest resolution for that annoyance. The 1000H is nice and light and easy to tote, but so are other netbooks.
On the whole, I wish that I had purchased something else, and the next time that I am in the market for a netbook, I shall.
- Best Asus EeeYet !
     By A3GFQHHVMEAIO on 2008-09-12
I had previously owned the Asus 701 Eee pc. It was nice and light, good for surfing the web and emails, screen was small 7" and keyboard was too small. When I saw the price and read the features of this unit, I immediately went to the local store to see it in person. I also wanted to check out the complaints and see if they were legit. Wow, I was impressed. Screen is perfect for me, much larger ,sharper and brighter than the 701. The keyboard is a pleasure and I can now type a composition. I immediately sold my 701 on Ebay. I'm typing this review on the Asus 1000H now. I never use the right hand shift so the out of place right shift was not a problem. Screen came set at 1024x600 and is brighter and sharper than my Toshiba M75 if you can believe it. You can adjust the size bbu the 1024x600 is perfect for me. When surfing the web, the pages fit perfectly on the screen. The 80g hard drive is partioned into two 40g drives. This helps to speed up windows xp. Speaking of speed, with the 1GB factory installed memory all my programs work beautifully. Love the black style, the smuging on the black is so easy to wipe clean and is not a problem for me. I have always prefered a mouse pad and the pad included is perfect, not too sensitive, and is packed with nice features like two finger page scrolling. Three USB ports, 1 SD Card slot , wireless can be set for B,G or N. Very cool! Battery life is incredible. Use the included power settings to set your battery life to max when needed. This battery life is 3 times the life of my Tosbiba laptop. In conclusion, have you noticed how many times I used the word PERFECT?! Well this macine is! I am going to sell my Toshiba 15" laptop and pick up a USB slimline CD/DVD burner for this Asus and I will be all set. Thank you Intel and Asus!!
- Fix Your Shift Key on the eee!
     By A1MN0VBDQKWYDK on 2008-09-24
There are plenty of comprehensive reviews about the eee here so I won't get into too much detail on this. In a nutshell, I have been very happy with my eee and its capabilities - Great size & performance compromise & a more manageable screen size that the 900. The unit is thicker than I expected but still overall a great size. Not having an optical drive is no big deal at all (you can share a drive on a desktop machine you may have on your network & run it over WI-FI for any installs - this has worked perfect for me) and the battery life is fantastic if you are used to a typical laptop.
As many have mentioned though the right shift key can be a bit annoying & I couldn't find much on the internet about this so I figured I would post some comments here after solving the problem with bits & pieces of info I collected. I did not want to mess with the registry etc & found a very easy tool (my Microsoft & essentially built into windows) that lets you remap the keys. The first thing you will need is this though: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9D467A69-57FF-4AE7-96EE-B18C4790CFFD&displaylang=en which is a resource kit which works with the XP installed on the eee. Install this & go to a command prompt & type "remapkey.exe". You get a nice visual diagram of two keyboards & all you need to do is drag keys from the top keyboard (old mapping) to what you want them to do on the bottom. I dragged the right shift on the top to the up arrow on the bottom as well as the up arrow on the top to the right shift on the bottom (you could just do the first part if you want both keys to act as a shift) and after a restart its as if it was always like this. This is a fantastic prank tool if you would like to drive one of your friends nuts as well... If you are very particular you can also take a small flat head driver & gently pull on the left side of each key to pull them off & swap them. The keys are mounted by 4 points towards the corners so you are trying to turn the key inside out if that makes sense. Imagine folding each edge of the key up so it will release the mount point where the white rockers clip in. Someone posted a pic where you can see this here - thanks to the photographer of this one: http://www.coderetard.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/eeepc_keyboard.jpg
My eee now has the keys swapped both physically & in software & there is no additional installed programs using sys resources. Would recommend for the many who are driven nuts by this as its a 10 min fix...
- Very nice
     By A2FD1921TYZS5T on 2008-08-21
I am very glad I got this computer. It is simply beautiful to look at and handle, and is very smart looking. It comes with a very nice travel protector.
The price is very reasonable and its capabilities are good. I like that I did not have to load up on extra accessories, and that I got a fully functioning computer for the straight price.
It does not take long to get up and running every time you turn in on.
I loaded up all of Microsoft Office with no problem. I got my wi-fi fixed up for home (though you should not expect to piggyback onto somebody else's wi-fi signal because it is not secure).
The battery, however, is good for three hours, and not seven since that is exactly what the little indicator says = 3 hours. I was hoping for that six/seven hours that was promised.
All in all, it is doing exactly what I intended, except for the wi-fi in downtown San Francisco.
And I love the 80 gigs of RAM.
- Asus EEE 1000h 80g
     By AS5UI3N4LUMJH on 2008-08-22
I've only had this for a couple days - but I'm really impressed with it so far. I wanted a small, light, low cost, high quality, laptop for internet and simple windows applications. That is exactly what I got. As others have commented - the screen is very, very good with fantastic brightness. The overall build quality is also very nice - it does not feel like a toy. The keyboard is a bit small (no surprise there) and will take a bit of an adjustment - but I think that will go away as an issue with a little time. Battery life varies with a number of factors - but it has reported over 6 hours with optimized settings and seems to generally be quite good. The wireless internet works well - no problems connecting in a couple different places on a recent trip.
In short - I'd buy it again if I had it to do over.

A Very Good camera, 1.3 Megapixels
Im Very satisfied with my new laptop.
- Sweet!
     By A1R2E0BY0JJCMI on 2008-08-26
After having rec'd and unpacked my new Eee PC 1000H I ran it through several chores in which the little Asus was sweet!
Fast boot time and after allowing it to download all new Windows updates I tried out some of the various programs. I bought the 1000H mainly as a carry along word processor because I do a lot of writing and a small, easy to tote, computer would be idea for me. Well, I had wondered about the keyboard size but was plesantly surpised to find that I could touch type with ease on the 1000H!
However, the keyboard does have a flexing that is a bit unsettling but it stills performs well after getting use to the flexing.
I hooked an external dvd/cd drive and loaded my MS map to it with no problems at all. I also tried out a DVD just to see how it performed and it did great--sound and picture were very good!
All in all, this in one sweet little travel companion! If the keyboard didn't have the flexing I would have given it 5 stars.
Also the battery life has been exceptional. A great machine for the buck!
- An amazing little computer
     By AEZLVIKMXCGLI on 2008-08-30
I would really classify this computer as a very small notebook rather than a netbook. With the 10" screen and 6 cell battery it's substantially larger and heavier than the Asus 4g, 900 series, or Acer Aspire One. That being said, it still seems miniscule compared to a 12" or 14" laptop. With the sensible 1024X600 resolution on this screen, the fonts are the same size or larger than on my 12" laptop with 1280X800 resolution.
I replaced the drive with a 7200 rpm 200 GB drive. As a software developer, I've loaded all my development tools and databases on it and it all works extremely well. The only speed issue I've encountered seems to be with IE rendering some pages.
It fits into a caselogic dvd player case with room for the power adapter and a few odds and ends.
As a second computer geared to travel or quick use in a coffee shop, it's just outstanding!
- Eee PC 1000H "Excellent Product"
     By A3I4LZXKDSB4XD on 2008-09-05
Received Eee PC 1000H today on time. Opened it up and followed installation instructions. Set Up was very easy, I got on internet using "Wired Connection" and "WireLess Connection" I can type on key board just like a full size computer. EXCEPT: As noted by others "Right Shift Key" is a pain to use. I can live with that though. Other than that I am very happy with purchase. I used it for 4 hours pluged into AC power, it never got overly warm. I am thinking of buying a second one for my wife. Comes with nice slip case w/zipper. I also ordered a stick of 2GB memory to replace the 1GB stick, but it has not arrived, yet. But, to tell you the truth it runs very fast, just using 1 GB. I installed firewall, Antivirus and surfed internet, at same speeds as my desktop. VERY HAPPY WITH THIS LAPTOP.
ASUS Eee PC 1000H 80G (10-inch Display, 1.6 GHz Intel ATOM Processor, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony
- I love it!
     By A3OUOSKUOL7JZS on 2008-09-06
I bought an Asus Eee PC 701 4G as a secondary laptop when they first came out and was the envy of everyone that saw it. I immediately installed an nlited version of XP Pro and installed 1GB of ram. I thought I really had something and liked it even though the screen was a little small for me.
Then I heard about 900 and the 901. Pass! Not impressed. Then along came the Eee PC 1000H. Right up my alley. Had to have it. Sold my 701 and ordered the 1000H. LOVE IT, LOVE IT! As others have noted, the right shift key is out of place, but I am not a touch typist so it doesn't matter to me. Not crazy about the glossy exterior finish because it shows every little smudge of a finger print, but again, only a minor annoyance. The LED backlit display is really bright. So much so that you can turn it way down and still see it good while also conserving battery power. I like the nice sized multi-touch trackpad, although the buttons are a little stiff. My favorite feature is the built in bluetooth. Yes I know they now make itty bitty dongles that you can leave in the computer, but I don't want anything sticking out the side of my computer. Besides, it would then be taking up an otherwise useful usb port. With one mouse click I can connect to my T-Mobile Blackberry Curve through bluetooth to sync, transfer a file or connect to the internet and not miss a call. I love that! I also use a bluetooth Microsoft 5000 laptop mouse, bluetooth stereo headset for watching movies or listening to music, and my bluetooth headset for my phone also works with Skype.
The much improved camera resolution is great with Skype. I don't know where they got that 7hr battery life spec from. I seem to get about 4.5 - 5hrs with wifi and bluetooth on. I could go on and on, but you get the point, it's just great.
I read a lot of reviews and was initially leaning toward the MSI Wind until the price of the 1000H came down, then it was a no brainer for me. I didn't get into all the technical aspects of it because there are plenty of tech reviews for that. I just want to let you know my overall opinion coming from an average Joe with 2 desktops (1 Dell, 1 HP) and 3 other laptops (1 Sony, 2 Dells), that I am more than pleased with my 1000H and will be using it MUCH more than the 701 4G it replaced. By the way, I didn't notice the keyboard flex or fan noise that others have mentioned.
I love Amazon for the free shipping and no tax. Go Amazon!
- Close to perfection for the price

I was dead set to buy the 6-cell MSI Wind based on its online glowing reviews for my wife who wanted a small and highly portable laptop. Throughout the summer, I became disillusionned by the repeated delays and high retail prices for the 6-cell MSI Wind when available. So I moved to plan B and took another look at the 6-cell, XP ASUS Eee PC 1000H that had just declined in price to about $550. The Amazon reviews were highly positive (thank you all!) and addressed some of my concerns, such as the flex of the keyboard. In early September, the unit was offered by Amazon for $450. I ordered it and received it within a week.
The ASUS Eee PC 1000H is not perfect, but comes close to perfection. For the price, I feel it is the best ultra mobile PC (netbook) out there, having followed the evolution of this technology since May 2008. I have used the unit intensely for three days for my evaluation.
First, the weaknesses (most of which have been mentioned in previous Amazon reviews):
1. The awkward position of the right shift key. If you do a lot of touch typing, this may slow you down a bit. It does not bother me (or my wife) too much.
2. The left and right buttons behind the comfortable trackpad are hard to press. For me and my wife, this is a minor problem. Time will tell whether they will become "softer." I prefer the horizontally positioned buttons of the 1000H, compared to the vertical ones of the Acer Aspire One (they interfered a bit with the trackpad when I tested it).
3. Fingerprints will appear quickly. Smudges do not really bother me (or my wife). The unit comes with a wiping cloth.
4. The 6-cell battery life is good (4:45 hours in both Auto Mode or Power Saving Mode), but far short of the advertised six or seven hours.
5. The 80 GB hard drive comes in two partitions of 40 GB each. I wish I would have a single partition.
The strengths are abundant:
1. The 10" 1024 x 600 screen is superb in brightness and sharpness. It can be used comfortably for continuous use. For me, the threshold for minimum size is 10 inches. 8.9 inches is not that much smaller, but it is harder to read for continuous use. Watching a downloaded movie on the ASUS Eee PC 1000H was quite pleasant.
2. The sound quality of the unit is spectacular. It blew me away. The ASUS sounded better than my regular Dell laptop. However, even at its maximum level on the sound card, the volume level of the speakers was a bit low for watching a movie with Windows Media Player (with volume level fully up on the player). Of course, this is not a problem when you use a headset.
3. The processor (in conjunction with 1 GB RAM) is speedy. Even though it is not as fast as a dual core processor or fast Intel 4 processor, the applications open quickly. I multitasked with a live audio stream, a program download, and a few open programs, and I did not notice much slowdown. I was even able to play successfully a live 480p video clip from the Apple gallery. I am impressed. Of course, you need to draw the line with online HDTV content, which will not work well on the unit because the processor is not fast enough.
4. The keyboard is comfortable to type. It is close to a full-size keyboard. There was no flex on my keyboard.
5. The built-in camera provides stunning video quality. Both the camera and the built-in microphone worked fine with Skype.
6. The ASUS is fairly quiet--more quiet than my Dell laptop.
7. The size and weight (3.2 pounds) are quite acceptable. The ASUS Eee PC 1000H is heavier and larger than the previous Eee models and the Acer Aspire One, but it is important to remember that the 1000H has a 6-cell battery. The 1000H is still quite small and light compared to regular laptops. I can put it in my briefcase without any problem, and my wife can put it in her bag.
8. The unit comes with a sleeve bag. This may be a minor advantage, but it was important to me for protection. In addition, I did not have to buy one!
9. The ASUS comes with a variety of programs: anti-virus, StarOffice, MS Works (which includes a dummy-down version of Word), WinDVD, Acrobat Reader 8, etc. I replaced some programs and added others without any difficulty. I installed MS Office 2003 with a USB stick by saving the CD as an image to the memory stick with Roxio and opening and extracting the ISO file with Undisker 1.6 to the hard drive of the ASUS. This installation worked fine. But you cannot just copy the CD to the USB stick, presumably because hidden files will not be transferred.
Thank you ASUS for making such an innovative product and Amazon for carrying it.
- Disappointed

I was initially excited by the portability of this product. However, upon receiving it, the device crashed within the first 24 hours and wouldn't reboot. Additionally, I found that I had difficulty with the size of the keyboard.
My experience with this sale worsened in my interactions with the vendor, Beach Camera. They don't accept returns on opened computer products and were less than pleasant in efforts to resolve this. I was left to deal directly with the manufacturer who replaced the product.
I suggest buyers actually sample the keyboard and get it from a vendor that allows returns if you're not satisfied.
- Excellent!!!

I just got a new one and it does what its suppose to do.
I'm happy with it.
