  • When Great Sex (And the City) Goes Bad ...

    By A2LW5AL0KQ9P1M on 2008-08-22
Perhaps because I so adore the television-series, I so loathe this big-screen debacle.

Let's start with "the small stuff": the heinous product-placement. I'm not talking about the Manolos, the Louis Vuitton, or the Dior (that's not "product-placement," that's love of haute couture) ... I am talking about the ubiquitous Vitamin Waters, the close-up of Carrie's new Sprint phone, the shopping-bags from Bluefly (and if you've never shopped Bluefly, you should know it's a "designer outlet" ... as in last year's Prada-rejects ... decidedly not "Carrie"). It is insulting to be bombarded with these pedestrian (if not "bargain-basement") items that have little relevance to the work. Take note, Michael Patrick King: your audience picks-up on these things. Try a more subtle approach in the future.

Now, steady yourself for the real criticism: the writing. Once clever and witty, the film adopts an entirely low-brow tone. Gone are the double-entendres and witty retorts ... instead King has given us only the basest of conversation. (Without any nuance in the script, Samantha becomes especially abhorrent and Charlotte, a bit dim-witted). In the most unforgivable moment, the writing sinks to an extended "bodily-function" joke (no spoilers). It is bizarre and debasing. (When Miranda had her own mishap while changing Brady's diaper, it was funny and real ... when it happens between adult women, well, it seems like something a teenage boy would write). Yuck. (And, I'm not entirely convinced that one's more cosmopolitan friends would find it amusing).

And while I'm not opposed to "low-brow" (hey, I dig Will Farrell films), I AM opposed to hack. Here's what I learned from King's "illuminating" writing: 1.) children repeat words they hear adults say, 2.) children are messy eaters, 3.) Jennifer Hudson is well endowed 4.) and "illegal Cuban" cigars are the best. Thank you for repeatedly stating the obvious in the most stilted, awkward manner possible. And all the ado with the "love" key-chain ... gag. Oh, and King, the auction-scene ... it's been done a THOUSAND times! (See: The Cosby Show: "The Auction"). That PAINFULLY PREDICTABLE moment ranks as the second-most unforgivable moment of the work. Bottom-line, I was struck breathless by the surface-writing (to the point of absolute frustration).

Writing aside, King's struggle to transition from television to film was evident. The direction and framing were fairly sloppy (occasionally, I was unsure where King wanted my eye to focus). And the "Honeymoon segment" ... I was instantly catapulted back to "bad" on-location sitcoms ... the shots in Mexico reminded me of "The Brady Bunch: Hawaii Bound": bad color, very bad sound, horrendous approach all-together.

Had this film been thoughtful and fun, the TWO HOURS AND TWENTY-EIGHT minutes would have been a joy. Instead, every second that elapsed destroyed the memory of a genuinely great television series. (And, it must be said that this was not a problem with the actors -- who gave their best. This was a problem with script/direction/production). At this epic run-time, why didn't the cast and crew just invest in a reunion season??!! (They could have slowed-down the production a little and genuinely focused on an honest, compelling story).

This film currently has a giant "SPLAT!" at Rottentomatoes ... these are professionals who gave it a 54% approval-rating as of this hour. Many former-fans will not allow themselves to view King's work as anything but pleasant nostalgia ... many will find themselves laughing at the half-hearted jokes and empty-minded comments. But critical viewers (as in, the "smart-viewers" that the show once attracted) may walk away angry. REALLY ANGRY.

  • Fabulous movie!

    By A2SZ409T152HBG on 2008-08-23
I must say, the first person who wrote a review for this is so snobby! Take the movie for what it is! It brought closure to the series. And as for the designers and "haute couture", seriously, how much money can a writer make anyway!! It is realistic and it brought emotions running back again. I LOVED the series as well and I think that people shouldn't take movies so seriously. Just have fun and take it!

  • Label's and Love

    By A1WSFHRBY2ZD1R on 2008-08-04
I have been a fan of the series "Sex and the City" since 2000, when I watched HBO's recap of the first two seasons one late night on HBO2. From that moment on, even at the age of 13 I feel in love with these characters: Miranda (the cynic), Charlotte (the old-fashioned), Samantha (the slut), and Carrie (the social anthropologist). But those one-dimension descriptions do not do the series justice at all. For 6 beautiful seasons the HBO comedy turned dramedy focused upon the life and adventures of a group of friends who see their friendship mature and blossom into a family while they try to navigate down the crazy road of love.

Over a year ago when I heard news that a long-awaited feature-film was actually a possibility to say the least I was a little scared. I remember the how for the course of a year the anticipation kept building up and up for the films impending May 2008. And when cast interviews, trailers, and posters started to appear I got really excited. And then release day came and I was there at midnight with my best friend, dressed up and excited. And to say honest the movie didn't disappoint at all.

While the film had some flaws at the element of being a feature film (what is to be expected from a first-time director), it wasn't the special effects or camera angles that were important. No, it was the acting and the reunion of characters that fans have been missing for the past 5 years. The story serious didn't disappoint, even with its whooping 2 ½ hour run-time. It was the story that everyone was hoping for: One of reunions, love, the testament of commitment, the butterflies that come with everything at stake, and the beautiful experiences of love. At the level of plot the producers kept almost everything rush until after the film's release - which was a very good idea. Giving away even the minorist of plot details would destroy the films experience, and lessen the effect of the girl's reunion. All I have to say is that there are moments you'll find your jaw on the group, your eyes tearing up, and your chest aching from laughter. It truly is an adventure in those 2 ½ hours.

The film's $55 million release weekend take accompanied by the almost $400 total gross is a testament to the fans that love this show. HBO has already planned a sequel and even a third film later down the line. And while I believe those films will be amazing - they will not be able to capture the magic of this original film. It was the reunion people didn't think would happen, and it provide that beyond the dramas of life, friendship will truly survive.

  • Like Catching Up With Old Friends!!

    By A3AOKQCH0YBZDS on 2008-10-02
I loved watching this HBO Series immensely and was sad to see it go off the air! So, when "Sex & The City", the movie came out, it felt like catching up with old friends you hadn't seen in a few years....

The movie still has the same cast of actors playing the roles of characters we've come to know and love. Everything in the movie clicked and felt right from the storyline, the funny situations and the blips that happen along the way. Watching the movie version of "Sex & The City" was like watching an extended version of one of the television episodes, letting us, the viewers, see where & what the characters are up to now.

The entire movie was well done. If you liked the television series, then you'll like the movie too.

  • Sex and the City

    By A2FSWT02Z7SZJW on 2008-08-23
It was like visiting my old friends once again. I enjoyed the movie from beginning to end. The ladies, as always, did not dissapoint. If you are not a fan of Sex and the City TV series, stay home. If you are a fan, go alone or with other fans. The non-addicted to Sex and the City will make nasty comments and spoil all the fun. It's the clothes, the locations, the friendships, and yes the sex. It was great.

  • Sex and the City on Blu-ray!
    By A8S11VP9Z36D6 on 2008-08-17
I was initially against a continuation of the runaway hit HBO series, Sex and the City - The Complete Series (Collector's Giftset) I felt that the season finale was perfection and any other stories to be told would only spoil it. Once the movie started though, I was drawn in and it felt great to see these "familiar" friends again: Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis). Carrie and Mr. Big (Chris Noth) decide to tie the knot, and the movie revolves around how their relationship takes the next step. Meanwhile, Miranda and Steve are dealing with Miranda neglecting their relationship. Samantha has become an L.A. housewife and is none too happy about continually playing second-fiddle to Smith. Charlotte...well, she is just living a perfect life with adopted daughter and husband Harry. The movie continues the vision of the series: insightful, witty, and extremely well written. Jennifer Hudson has a nice supporting role as Carrie's personal assistant; she brings sass to her role and definitely leaves the door open for a possibility of a "next generation" of young hopeful women to hit New York City. My gripes? I felt that fashion played too much of a role; in the TV series, it was a nice semi-silent costar. In the movie, it was a little "in your face" and over the top. I also felt that Samantha's storyline seemed a little out of character and contrived; her supposed weight gain was minimal and for her to ever stay in the background for Smith just seemed out of step. Many original cast members returned for the movie, although some were absolutely wasted as they were relegated to non-speaking cameos. For some reason, Stanford & Anthony are now close friends (possibly even more), which is totally against how they were in the series. Obviously, much has happened in the years since we last saw them; it left a feeling that an explanation scene or two must be on the cutting room floor. Removal of some of the fashion stuff and putting back in more of the witty dialogue would have benefitted the movie greatly. Speaking of putting back in...yes, this version is an extended cut. Many scenes have been lengthened, and it definitely helps give the movie a more finished feel and explains much that I thought was missing in the theater. Extra fun is Carrie's fashion show in her apartment, where she tries on many of her 1980's bad outfits for the girls, who rate whether the outfits should be kept or tossed. In the extended cut, ALL the girls (including Charlotte's daughter Lily) join in the fun and try on the outfits. This is especially wonderful as SJP does not necessarily deserve the lion's share of credit for this successful series; it is definitely an ensemble cast. The restored Halloween scene of Harry as The Addams Family's Uncle Fester is not to be missed, either!

Still, I saw it twice on the big screen - thoroughly entertained both times, and hoping for a follow-up!

The picture on the blu-ray is wonderful, with one exception. Just like the promotional photos for the movie, the actress' eye area is WAAAAAY over photoshopped/CGI enhanced to the point that they look unnatural. This is especially the case for Sarah Jessica Parker. The CGI work is not done well, as it changes from shot to shot, and looks fake to begin with. The sound mix is fantastic too, especially with a system that takes advantage of it.

    Bonus features for Blu-ray version:
    * Audio Commentary by director Michael Patrick King
    * Additional Scenes restored to the actual movie as well as a separate section with deleted scenes that feature commentary by Michael Patrick King as to why they were cut.
    * A Conversation with Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King: a nice look at the movie with SJP and MPK, giving further insight into many of the choices made for the movie.
    * The Fabulous Fashion of Sex And The City: Excellent featurette with Patricia Fields discussing how she finds all the different fashions for the character. Not one to get caught up in labels, her talent is for mixing up totally different looks and creating magic.
    * Fergie in the Studio: watch a hit in the making as the singer records Labels or Love for the movie soundtrack, interspersed with Fergie fawning over the original TV series. A short featurette but cool to watch nonetheless.

    * Blu-ray Exclusive Content:
    Interactive Features (Games) -
    * Sex and the City: The City. Click on different areas of the city and select a corresponding clip from the movie that talks about fashion, entertainment, etc. Nice idea, but does take a little bit of patience and navigation work. Think Google Map!
    * Dish It!: Pop-ups of trivia and info will appear while you watch the movie if this is selected. Very fun!

Technical specs: 151-min. extended cut on a BD-50 dual-layer disc with 1080p video (1.85:1) and English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround audio (English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and English and Spanish subtitles).

  • For fans of the show
    By A2INL3AYAT6325 on 2008-09-25
OK, needless to say you need to be a fan of the show to enjoy the film.

I liked the film, but I did NOT love it.

    TOO LONG.

The part about Big & the wedding. Carrie was being Carrie & this upset him? She IS INTO the clothes, style, etc & she is being herself &he does not like it.

IN this movie Carrie has NO financial problems. Just now had written 3 books. Throughout the show we heard her max out her credit card for shoes/clothes.

They could have made Candace Bergen in her 1 brief scene look a little more done up. Made her look like an old woman working at "Vogue".

For woman THE MUCH TALKED ABOUT "FULL MONTY" MALE SCENE. If you blink you will miss that part & it is in later in the film, NOT LIKE CLIPPING SHOW IT LEADS PEOPLE TO BELIEVE IT IS.

The Miranda & Steve storyline we knew about before the film opened. Storybook ending.

Stanford & Anthony did NOT like each other in the series, what is the difference here?

Charlotte & Harry were just supporting characters in this. Hinted before the film opened she would FINALLY have a kid & does. NO SURPRISE.
The small good Charlotte moment when she gets to confront "Big" Chris Noth. NEEDED THAT TO BE LONGER.

I was totally unhappy how the Samantha & Smith storyline ended. While watching the film end you keep hoping for that storybook ending. You get disappointed.

Jennifer Hudson's character I liked, she needed to be in it longer.

A good effort but NOT as good as you would expect the film to be.

DVD package. NO chapter search list. Just an advertisement & coupon for a digital copy.

  • A movie only a fan could love - and maybe not even a fan
    By AMZS7175DSNN4 on 2008-09-25
Sequels are impossibly difficult. Especially one that revolves around relationships. I liked the way the series left the ladies and I resented their resurrection. I hated seeing the girls suffer with the men they're meant to be with. The only character who wasn't made to suffer is Charlotte. It was funny only at times. As for Carrie's role in this movie: she is the model of how not to treat your boyfriend/fiance. I hope bridezillas-to-be learn from Carrie. Overall I was disappointed and hope they leave things be. The series left them best and that's how I prefer to remember them.

  • Comfortably Predictable
    By A2U2ZPHR54XLSS on 2008-10-04
Loved the series, thought the movie was fairly predictable. (Caution - spoilers ahead!) When the big wedding/big dress came, I thought "wow, that's generally the climatic ending" and so was not totally unsurprised that Big choked. Anyhoo ... everybody has loads of money and can fly around the world at the drop of a hat (or the jilting of a bride.) That's nice ... and totally unbelievable. When Charlotte had her "accident" in Mexico, even my husband commented "laughing at that is just mean"; I wouldn't want my friends laughing at me for something so deeply humiliating. Carrie was just as good as deflecting blame away from herself as ever; when Miranda finally tells her she told Big they were crazy to get married, Carrie acts like THAT was the reason he didn't show up for the wedding. I REALLY didn't like her character much after that. But in the end, everybody lives happily ever after and/or reverts back to type: Carrie & Big are together, Miranda & Steve reconcile; Charlotte finally has a biological child; and Samantha is happily on her own. I'm not sorry I saw this movie, but I doubt I'd watch another sequel.

  • The fashion is the eye candy, the plot is the brain candy
    By A1JDT2VPCZVQW9 on 2008-10-21
There is nothing oh so deep in Sex and the City movie. The fashion was fun, as usual. (And I'm someone who left my knowledge of fashion trends and designers in my senior year college dorm- the day I graduated!)Carrie is still Carrie, selfish and immature as ever. She can't seem to "hear" Mr. Big (John) over her own ego. She wants a big wedding, he wants something small and plain. Of course, they clash, argue, and then make-up. A happy ending for them.

Miranda is still cynical. She is feeling the pressure of her full-time job and motherhood. She lost her desire for Steve. Steve has a one-night stand. Now what? Will they be "happily ever after"? Will Miranda learn to work on herself? She doesn't have her shrink like she did in the TV show. What will she do?

Charlotte is living the most normal life of the 4. She is raising her adopted daughter. She gets pregnant. Yay! The only bad thing that happens to her is a case of Montezuma's Revenge. Even then, she recooperates quickly.

Samantha, now living in LA, has also changed. She is a stay-at-home live-in girlfriend to Smith. They are still together after four years. Samantha has enough free time to visit her friends in NYC. But how does she really feel about her new role? We finally see how miserable she really is when she makes a surprise visit to Charlotte's baby shower. Her character's closure is the saddest. But at least we now know that Smanatha is working on her issues, instead of covering them up with lots of sex.

Of course, the movie is all about product placement. There is mention of Manolos, Vogue magazine, etc. The four women are still going out on the town, decked to the 9s. There is the fashion show. that stuff doesn't really interest me anymore. Minus 1 star.

Also, there is too much "soft-core" sex in this movie. Samantha's well-libido-ed neighbor gives more of a show than I wanted. (Wouldn't some sexy sounds convey the same message as a soft-core sex scene???) The make-up sex between one of the 4 main characters and her guy is also way too much for me to see. Maybe some passionate kissing instead??? I'd get the message that way- it's make up sex!!!! Minus 1 star.

Ladies, rent this movie for fun. It's a nice wrap-up to the series. Don't expect any epiphanies, just Tiffany's.

  • Sex and the City
    By A3MVHRD2GJ2XCF on 2008-08-26
Watching the series and now the 'Movie' simply takes you to a place as if you either feel like you 'have lived there' OR want too! The movie couldn't have re-written my life with MY 'Mr. BIG' any better, except for the HAPPY ending....whatever! All I can say is, bring plenty of kleenex (I did and I shared too!) because you need it for the tears of sadness, as well as the joy. The ladies ALL had some great "Life-Lessons" to teach us all, about men in particular. I LOVED IT!!! Every woman should see it!

  • Fun, Funny and a Dose of Relatability
    By A1MQOICJQ192O1 on 2008-09-14
The movie was fun and funny, and the potty-humor thing was a real deal and completely minor in terms of time and significance, and adults who take themselves so seriously and consider themselves so "cosmopolitan" might need to avoid the movie, or most movies in general.

Most of all, one of the things that made me love the movie is that it was NOT chock-full of the cheesy double-entendres and one-iners that made the show a success. My only fear with the movie was "gee, how are they going to take cheesy puns and turn it into a two-hour movie worth watching?" Luckily, they didn't try to do that. They made it based on how real life happens and still interjected plenty of humor and spirit of each character, making them, in my opinion, better and with greater depth than ever before. And the acting was SUPERB. They have all honed their craft in the off-time.

The movie had actual plots instead of 30-minute slapstick-type scenarios, keeping it true to the last seasons of SATC, but still had lots of smaller less serious mishaps that keep it fun (and also just like real life).

Further, the show did an amazing job giving us the same style that kept up drooling for seasons over beautiful fashion and city living, but this time, the characters (even Carrie) didn't take the style so completely seriously as the end-all-be-all, which made the characters and their lives much more relatable for those of us who don't live on Park Avenue.

Lose yourself. Laugh hard. Cry a little. Laugh some more. A watch it with a close gal-pal. Well worth it.

The reason I left off one star is because though I loved that the movie made me think about my own life, friendships and relationship, it wasn't one of the few earth-shaking, life-making movies that reshapes what life is and how I view it, which makes me give that last star.

If I were basing the stars solely on how much I enjoyed the movie and the entertainment factor and acting (the acting was superior to any SATC episode!), I would give it five stars.

  • What a Disappointment!
    By A192Z1UVDNK88E on 2008-10-09
I'm a huge SATC fan, have seen most episodes and am now watching them in order on HBO on Demand, one or two at a time. (We're on Season Two now.) That said: what a huge disappointment this movie was. It didn't have the down-to-earth quality of the show at all. Carrie is what, 45?...and still acting (and dressing) like when she was 20? Just silly. The script and situations do not have the punch and zip and charm of the series. There are caricatures instead of characters, like the way they have Charlotte doing little hops instead of just walking. The clothes in the movie are ridiculously over-the-top, almost like from a Dr. Suess movie (the huge peacock on her forehead with her lovely wedding dress? The flower on her chest in that one scene...the flower is the size of a dinner plate! Stupid.) The worst problem by far, though was what they did to Big. In the series, Big is strong, confident and cool. In the movie, he's a wimpy child! "Carrie...{whisper} Carrie, where are you? Just tell me it's you and me. Just tell me..." Gag me. I turned the movie off after TWO HOURS and it wasn't done yet. I'm not surprised it made millions...we all love SATC. But this movie SUCKS.

  • Excellent Movie!
    By A3KVABMS51VCEA on 2008-08-26
I am so happy the Blu-Ray is finally available for pre-order. This was an awesome movie! I loved the series and excited when the movie came out. It was the event we were all waiting for!

  • The Star Of This Movie Is NYC!
    By A3LKP6WPMP9UKX on 2008-10-05
I give this movie 3 1/2 stars. Why? I look at this wildly popular cable series from a mother's perspective. The premise is dangerous. After seeing THE BEST OF EVERYTHING in the early 60s, I could not wait to leave Ga. and come to NYC. Even when I finally did arrive in '67, I was not ready for the REAL NYC. I have lived here on and off for over 40 years and I have never seen four women bond like this (who were not born and raised here) and have the kind of lives these women have. The only character that is believable is Charlotte.

The film is beautifully photographed, but there is way too much Malibu and not enough Brooklyn. Actually, no Brooklyn. Kim's character is so over the top and so not believable that it spoils the entire film for me. Ms. Nixon, as always, is perfect. You CAN believe she is an attorney married to a nebbishy guy like Steve. I was glad to see she got more scenes this time around.

Mr. Big is Mr. Big. All due respect, Carrie Bradshaw is so tiny, and so unappealing as a sexy gal, there is no way a NY millionaire like Big would date her muchless marry her. And all those 'dream sequences' you read about in the paper, don't exist. They're for real. Also, no one dies in this film. That was another ripe rumor when the movie first came out. Everyone remains intact to the end credits.

Carrie Bradshaw's ability to buy designer shoes and clothes does not gel with the reality of her job. Didn't she get fired just before she went to Paris? There is no mention in the film as to what she was doing for a living. OK, her wedding dress was comped, but what about all the other clothes she prances around in? She sells her apt. but like a miracle, she gets it back and has it redecorated. Huh? Of course there is a happy ending for everyone except the sex pot. I don't see how Kim Catrell continues to play this vapid, self-centered, shallow woman. The damage her lifestyle does to impressionable young women is devastating. What people outside NYC don't see are the headlines in our local papers about these young bar-hopping women who are found murdered virtually every month. They go to bars alone or with a girlfriend, they stay out too late, get too drunk and go off with the wrong man.

I rented this film. I did not buy it or go see it at the theater. The movie was entertaining but enough already. I know it made millions. I know people of a certain age love it. But with the financial disasters all around us, it's time to get real. No woman in NYC lives like this except maybe Paris Hilton and her sister and the Hearst girls. You have to have millions and millions to live this kind of life. And the rich men here don't date women like Carrie. They date other very rich successful women or major celebrities. Stay home girls and save yourself a lot of heartache. Life here is not like in Sex & The City.

  • Pleasantly Surprised
    By A2UYYRB1K8JNPU on 2008-10-08
I rented this movie, much to the utter chagrin of my boyfriend, without ever having seen the TV show. But, despite being wary about it, I have to say that I was totally captivated. It's a really long movie, about 2 and a half hours, but it didn't seem like it. Things progressed at a decent pace and was very interesting. I didn't find myself bored for one minute. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised that I fell in love with this movie and the characters.

  • Much Better The Second Time Around
    By A1WUPRPQBV4FB8 on 2008-10-09
This was the only film I saw this summer on the big screen and perhaps that's why I found it an initial disappointment. (I don't get out much). I think it was impossible to live up to all the hype associated with the opening. Having forgotten about it, I received the DVD as a gift and was reluctant to watch it again. But I'm certainly glad I did. With lowered expectations, I found this to be an enjoyable visit with the glamorous New York characters, Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Miranda Hobbs and Charlotte York Goldenblatt.

Make no mistake, above all else this is a fashion show. (A bright blue Manolo Blahaik with a five-inch heel is even used in place of a diamond ring). When the show was still on television I used to say my favorite part about it was the writing with fashion a close second. For the film it was the other way around. Because the characters are so well known their behaviors and lines at times come off as cliché. There is, however, the occasional surprise with some laugh-out-loud lines and some highly emotional moments. True fans of the show will definitely feel it's worth the watch.

What I liked best about this film is the focus on RELATIONSHIPS (on several levels) and how they evolve. I believe the whole concept of the Sex and the City industry is that even the most fanciful characters face real-life problems . . . it's just that these ladies look really gooooooood while they do.

  • One of my favorite movies of this type
    By A2770ZKHTHDQH7 on 2008-10-14
I loved this movie so much on the big screen, I'm buying it for me and my closest girlfriends for gifts. This movie is about the special bond women have with their closest friends and no matter what happens in their lives, they are there to support each other. I know some of the reviewers thought it was predictable. And it was somewhat. But the deeper message of this movie is what I loved about it and and why I'm buying so many copies of it for my friends.

  • Coming from a husband of a wife who just adores "Sex and the City", I enjoyed it a lot!
    By A2FRKEXDXDN1KI on 2008-11-03
SEX AND THE CITY THE MOVIE was definitely a highly anticipated film of 2008. A lot of my female friends and guy friends are fans of the HBO television series and even my wife was so hardcore that she and her female friends would have viewing parties every night the new episodes were shown.

For me, I've always enjoyed the series for it's in-depth look at love and relationships via the women's perspective, as much as I loved BBC America's look at love and relationships via the comedy "Coupling".

The series definitely took on a variety of topics, especially of how it related to the characters and the topics of love and sex were just hilarious, emotional and overall uplifting.

With the highly anticipated film reuniting the women four years since the series, we see Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), who has three successful books on love and still dating and very much love with Mr. Big (Chris Noth). The two are in the next step of their relationship about to move into an awesome apartment with an awesome closet but most of all, the two finally ready to tie the knot.

Samantha (Kim Cattrall) living in Hollywood to manage her model/boyfriend's career and missing New York City. Samantha is missing her former life of having fun and being the center of attention.

For Charlotte (Kristin Davis), Charlotte and husband are still happy and raising their adoptive daughter.

And Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), very busy with her job as a lawyer and as a parent but at the same time, somewhat neglecting her wife duties.

Without spoiling the storylines for each of these women, throw in some major wrenches to the lives of these women and you definitely get one sensational story about love, finding love, losing love and most of all to see the friendships of these four women tested.

Like the show, you get beautiful scenes of New York City and the beautiful settings. Also, the interesting and at times outlandish but most of the time elegant fashion courtesy of costume designer Patricia Field. Also, the musical setting of hearing Mairi Campbell's "Auld Lange Syne" to Run DMC's "Walk this Way" and various music as it plays an emotional and enjoyable setting for the various segments of the film.

But what makes this movie work is the well written storyline by Michael Patrick King who knows how to really balance each of the women's storylines but effectively writes a film that not only will women enjoy it but also men.

I have to give credit to another woman on the show who actually plays a significant role on the film. Jennifer Hudson's character as an assistant to Carrie Bradshaw definitely added a cool character component as a woman also looking for love in New York City, rents her designer bags but most of all, how she helps Carrie through a difficult time.

Nearly every character from the TV series had such an important role although I was surprised Stanford (Willie Garson) didn't have that many lines.

    SPECIAL FEATURES:

There are various versions of this DVD from the two-disc set and also the Blu-Ray editions which feature may special features. This widescreen edition only features director's commentary by Michael Patrick King.

"SEX AND THE CITY: THE MOVIE" works on all levels. Perhaps, maybe moreso for fans of the TV series who are familiar of the background of the women and also the supporting characters.

But everything comes together...the storyline, the setting, the fashion, the music...everything that the series is known for, you see it in a much extravagant form in this film.

An enjoyable film that is easily a must-own for "Sex and the City" fans.

  • A Movie Worth of the Series!
    By AKHE8NC7HO5MF on 2008-09-08
I won't lie. I went to this movie only because my wife insisted that I take her. I had seen the show throughout all the years it was on HBO and I knew pretty much all of the characters and storyline. The movie was a GREAT continuation of the series! It picked right up where the finale ended and the transition from small screen to silver screen is a successful one.

I think there was like, 300 people in the theater and probably only about... 10 guys. I think I was the youngest one at 27 years old. And you know what? I cried my eyes out. I did! The movie did SUCH a good job wrapping up the ending and it is a good one! If you watched the series and you're familiar with the characters and storyline, you will NOT be disappointed!

I have watched all of the seasons of Sex and the City and just love the show. My mom has never seen any of the episodes. We both went to the theater to see the movie and we both absolutely loved it. You do not have to be a fan of the show to enjoy this movie. It was hilarious!!!!! I just preordered this movie because I will definitely watch it again.

  • A Guy's Guide to Sex And the City
    By A32O5FZH994CNY on 2008-09-24
Okay guys, this is the reality. Your significant other is going to buy this movie and you are going to watch it with her.

Now the title seems promising. But this is about sex from the other perspective, hers. This means it is about relationships, and communication, and intimacy and trust. These are subjects women discuss among themselves at length and with us usually to be greeted by earnest but blank expressions. It is not something you necessarily get, but she wants you to, so you try.

Here we have four fortysomething friends whose bond remains tight through one romantic disaster after another. We have their men, who like you, are clueless but ernest. We have an alpha-girl Carrie who is getting married, to Mr. Big, played hugely by Chris Noth. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is a mid-list author which in New York makes you a minor celebrity. Her friends, mostly struggle with their own relationships, excedpt for one who is happily married thus proving marriage is not an impossible institution.

Well as fate would have it Carrie gets left at the altar by Mr. Big, and the rest of the movie (except for the not so surprising ending) is all about what a jerk he and men in general are.

So since you are going to watch it, I recommend a few tips. First watch it in Blu-Ray on an 1080p HDTV. The photography and scenes are gorgeous, especially in Mexico where the girls go on what would have been Carrie's honeymoon. Secondly the DVD comes with a "digital copy." This means you can install it on your iPod,

If you want to be extra sensitive install it on hers.

what a great script! I have waited so patiently for the dvd release. Yes, I am a fan of the show and was so excited with another chance to share 2 hours of my life with these fabulous actors and their life in NY.

So Big is back and does he continue to act out his 'lack of commitment" role with Carrie - this was subtly the best central part of the movie. I dont want to be a spoiler. The fans are lead through the twist and turn of the plot. being a girlie, yes, I screamed at the movie in certain parts- disbelieve and then I cried when the friendship all pulled together. And I loved the costumes. Although I am not sure everyone actually dresses like that in NY and I live here.

I loved every minutes of the film and wanted more. I hope they can pick up the series again ... with the new phases of their life. I prefer these characters than lipstick jungle.

  • A FINAL TO A FINAL

I love Sex and the City. I am a huge fan. I own all six seasons and anxiously awaited the movie's big day view. I thought it moved a tad bit slowly, in the beginning, but the plot was good and interesting enough to keep your attention. If you've followed the series, you know, it wouldn't have been Sex and the City if everything went smooth and peachy with no drama on Carrie''s end. For those of you who didn't enjoy the movie, oh well. I felt the scripts were well written and the scenes were very realistic. Definitely a great movie to add to your collection. If you're a fan or just want to sit back and watch, as my friend call it, a great chic flic', get this movie, it's worth it.

  • Magical!!!

Enjoyable and magical! AND, although some parts might be deemed expected...don't expect the expected because there are many wonderfully happy and sad ones! Don't miss it!!! The is a MUST SEE!

The movie arrived very quickly and faster than expected. The price was a bargain for a newly released movie and I was able to get free shipping by receiving it just a few days later. Very pleased with my purchase and will definately be buying from amazon again.
