Fantastic bluetooth headset! By A19KLKN3QU7RH on 2007-10-07
In my search for the perfect bluetooth headset, they ALL require compromises... it sounds great, but it's uncomfortable to wear for extended periods... it's lightweight, but the person on the other end can't always hear me... works great, but the batteries die in the middle of an average day or the volume can't be raised loud enough... you get the idea.
Well, Plantronics has come out with the Voyager 520, and it requires, for me, the minimum amount of compromise of any headset I've tried, and I've tried a LOT!
First, it utilizes a soft rubber ear bud which is cone shaped to fit in your ear canal, but is soft enough to not irritate your ears. The hook is made of firm plastic near the head set, then transitions into a soft, clear rubber for the portion of the hook that rests on your ear, so that the hook conforms to your ear, rather then forcing your ear to conform to it! The ear bud directs the sound of the person you're speaking with into your ear, providing sufficiently loud volume while blocking out external noise! You'll actually need to lower the volume on this headset, if you're using it in a quiet environment! Now that's a nice change.
First compromise... (yeah, there are still compromises, even on this head set!), it's larger then many other bt head sets. BUT... it's lightweight, and it's size allows for battery life that goes on and on and on. While I'd prefer a smaller size (think Samsung WEP 200, Nokia BH 800), I'll take the moderately larger form factor, if it delivers better sound quality in both directions, and longer battery life, and the 520 delivers on both counts (again, compromise...)
Second compromise... noise cancellation. Yes, the Voyager 520 DOES have noise cancellation, but frankly, it's not as strong as, or as good as the Aliph Jawbone, or the BlueAnt Z9, but it does work. Will it eliminate the thunder of a roaring 747, while you're standing on the runway at LAX? No. Will you look like you have a cheese grater stuck to the side of your face while using it? Again, NO!
Compromise.
The 520 also brings with it a desk charging cradle (cheap plastic), offers the user to connect to two bt devices, displays battery level each time you turn it on, etc. etc. Go to Plantronics site, if you really need/want all of the minutia.
Bottom line... If you don't mind it's conservative looks and slightly larger size, and you want EXCELLENT sound quality, great comfort and long battery life from your Bluetooth head set, check this one out.
You just may find it's worth the compromise!
Pretty Good, almost as good as the 510 (but not quite) By A3T3RCNZOCMD49 on 2007-12-05
I've tried them all: Moto, Jabra, Cardio, Plantronics 320 (junk), Jawbone (2 stars), and nothing came close to outperforming my trusty old Plantronics 510. Funky form factor, but great battery life and excellent sound quality. The new Plantronics 520 comes close in sound quality, but is more comfortable and looks better. Overall, a solid performer and recommended.
Fits great, sounds good By A9VRSKQ5R9SD3 on 2007-10-11
It is a nice fit. I have trouble with other earpieces, they always fall out of my ear, but this one is comfortable, no pinching and stays put. Sound quality is really nice. No one complains that they don't hear me either. The button took a bit of getting used to.. just one and its sometimes difficult to press it "in" and not "left" or "right." But after a few days I got the hang of it. Battery lasts me all day, sometimes more. Easily paired with 3 of my cell phones and also my desktop VoIP phone.
Good one overall , but noisy talking outside in the wind By A2W79AWZ4R6HQE on 2007-10-10
The product is very good. Fit and finish are excellent. The battery lasted almost 8 hours of talk time. Very impressive.I even purchased a car charger for this headset. Its very noisy when talking outside the car in windy conditions. Also the volume rocker button is tight when pressing up to increase the volume. But is just fine when decreasing the volume i.e pressing down. My friends said the sound quality is excellent for them , they felt like I am using the phone not the headset. But it was not excellent for me,just good. Overall its a good product. Worth my $50.00.
Great Value By A2C0VWKDHA1MON on 2007-10-19
I originally purchased another Plantroics product sold under the Blackberry wrapper and was disappointed in the Noise Cancellation. I went through several models and almost picked up the Aliph headset but I couldn't get passed the looks or the issues concerning it's fit to the ear.
I finally picked up this headset and it's outstanding. The multi-point blue tooth feature made it possible for me to test it out on both a Blackberry 8700 and an AT&T (HTC) 8525. I did 2 simple tests:
1. Called from my blackberry and left a voicemail on my 8525 with the radio blaring inside a car. Surprisingly, very little background noise left on the message.
2. I called from my 8525 and left a voicemail to the blackberry, driving with the windows down at 70 mph. Again, surprisingly, most of the noise was absent.
If that isn't enough, the 8 hours of talk time and the amazing standby time make this an awesome value. I'll admit the size is significantly larger than some of the really tiny units out there, however it fits really well on the ear with barely any pressure and yet it is stable enough to wear all day. And I think it's because of its size that it has significantly better performance characteristics to other competing products. You won't be disappointed.
- Good listen

This headset is lightweight and comfortable. You will not have any issues hearing your calls. I could hear my caller well even in noisy areas. The funnel like earpiece allows you to hear your caller at very low volumes. On a windy day outdoors your caller will hear wind noise. The one button design will take some getting used to if like me, you have had multi-button headsets in the past. I have it matched to a LG Venus phone. Paired right up didn't even have to enter a passcode. Comes with a cool docking station for charging that you have to assemble.
- Decent ear piece
     By AT324HZ96OQ9P on 2007-11-24
After sadly losing my 510 I bought this unit. The sound quality is better and overall I am satisfied but with some livable issues: 1. the unit is not as comfortable on the ear and in the ear, 2. the volume controls are the same button as the hang up button so you have to get used to that or deal with hanging up on people.
Overall I would recommend this unit to people who want an over the ear headset.
- Excellent Headset - Nice features and fairly comfortable
     By A213MNNCABU95F on 2008-02-08
I bought the 520 to go with my RAZR2 (not that it matters much - just for reference). This is a nicely designed and excellent performance BlueTooth headset. I'd like to lay this out with the positive/negative setup:
POSITIVE:
1) Great sound clarity - I could hear everything quite clearly without any hiss or voice artifacting from BT compression
2) Great voice clarity - nobody could even tell I was on the headset*
3) Nice looking - not over the top or obnoxious like some
4) Very Long Battery Life
5) Fairly Comfortable*
6) Good controls for volume and power
7) Easy to connect - though it does require a passkey for pairing. Some devices may not be able to do this, but my phone did it automatically.
8) Very good range - no problems with keeping the phone in my pocket - but keep it on the same side of your body, or you may notice bad signal
NEGATIVES:
1) The earpiece doesn't come off if you wear glasses - I think it can be pried off with a screw driver, I'm just not willing to experiment with it yet
2) If you are outside and it's windy, it sounds pretty bad, but I don't know any of these that can handle this issue perfectly
3) If there's an obstruction, the signal gets bad - not really a complaint as BT isn't designed for this.
4) Could have used another (hidden) button and indicator as all of the controls and statuses are through the same button and LED, though it does have differing colors.
*If it's windy or your phone is on the opposite side of your body, this isn't the case.
*The earpiece isn't too noticeable with glasses so its removability isn't too much of an issue - but after wearing it for a several hours, it can grow a bit uncomfortable. After a brief rest, it's not bad.
All in all, a great headset. I took off a star to cover all of the issues. A removable earpiece would have bumped this to 4.5 and if it had any capability to block the wind noise or eliminate it electronically, it would be a 5 for sure. Don't hesitate to buy it.

Plantronics units have typically proven to be the 'Cadillac' of Bluetooth headsets in my experience. My previous 510s have shown themselves to be comfortable long-term, long battery life, and stay in place. Could I find a replacement (for the 510 I'd just lost) that would do as well...let alone better? In a word, Yes.
I was fairly comfortable the 520 would be my next headset after doing the required research. However after reading the reviews on Amazon I become somewhat concerned. I decided to bank on past product experience and go ahead anyway.
The concerns about the docking station that have been made are way overblown and don't quite represent the situation. It's not that they give you something you have to 'put together', per se. Rather they send you the docking station (assembled) with the charger separate. By the way, it's the exact same charger you get with the 510, in case you too are upgrading.
Basically you get another '510' type charger-and-a docking station. If you decide you want to use the little docking stand, you just take the rubber foot off (it's only a two-piece unit), insert the adapter end into a little socket, and put it back together. In short, don't let all the reviews about...why didn't they give it to you assembled...bother you in the slightest. If they had, then we'd see reviews about...why didn't they give it to me separate...I don't need a docking station for travel.
As for the 520 itself, I find it definitely has superb sound quality compared to the 510. The 510 seemed to lose its edge during its life. The 520 has a noticeably better sound quality for recipients of my calls (I've asked...after the call), and it is also better for me on my end.
The earpiece now is more of a shaped 'waveguide', channeling the audio more effectively into your ear. I can see how it might not work for everyone, but in my case it works beautifully.
The fit and finish is also first class. I particularly like how they fit all the functionality that required 4 buttons before (510) into just one on this unit. The button on the 520 seems like its much more robust than the ones on the 510 (which I wore out twice).
As for those of you with BlackBerry's or similar, you can control volume via the phone w/o having to rely on the headset's controls. Your preference.
Oh, I should mention, while I've not run it to ground yet;), the suggested 8 hr battery life seems incredible. I put hours a day on my phone...I particularly like not worrying about headset battery life...and one thing the reviews haven't mentioned...the 520 gives you feedback as to whether its 1/3, 2/3, or >2/3 charged. Now, I only worry about my phone's charge...the headset will easily let me out talk the phone's talk time.
Last thoughts, I've used Plantronics warranty services previously (wore out buttons on a 510). They ship the replacement, w/o credit card, before you send the old one back. Their warranty service is about the best I've ever experienced and should be a consideration in your purchase. Second, we found the 510, it went through the laundry. My daughter's using it now.
If you liked the 510, you'll like the 520 at least as much, if not more.
Highly Recommended,
JT...
- Great Design. Works Great
     By A2SKEQT0WTB954 on 2007-10-15
THis headset has the usual plantronics quality and ups the ante with top-of-the-line sound quality and reception. Nice syling, small and light. This headset is a real winner. Works great with my Nokia 6103 and with my computer that has bluetooth built in. Best I have used on skype. Works with skype on my laptop also with bluetooth usb adapter. Just be sure to select bluetooth SCO as the mic and headset in skype.
- Top Notch Headset
     By AEA76V8K0CPK5 on 2007-11-15
I purchased this headset about two months ago and while it took a little getting used to, it compares favorably with the only other headset I've used, the Motorola HS850.
Comfort: The soft rubber ear channel and rigid/soft rubber hanger combo allows long term wearing. I sometimes forget it's on. The firmness of the control switch requires more than average pressure to toggle, but it's rigid construction far outweighs any comfort or ease of use concerns.
Sound quality: The soft rubber ear piece channels the speaker's sound into the ear canal, and while not a tight fit provides clear and ample volume. In quiet environments the speaker volume can be lowered. The windscreen and noise cancellation features are adequate, but any microphone without a physical windscreen or advanced DSP noise cancellation will transmit "pink noise" to the listener in windy conditions.
Battery life: Excellent. While not timed, I charge once every 4-5 days with 2-3 hours talk time per day.
Bluetooth range: The only area the Motorola HS850 bettered the 520. Using a Nokia 6682 mobile on AT&T, the phone must stay within about 10 feet of the headset or the signal starts crackling.
Construction: This is a well made unit which I can put into my blue jeans pocket without worrying about the case, switch or rubber being abused.
Antonline delivered on time and under cost of the other sellers on Amazon.
Best value in a head set I could find, and I'm a research-a-holic, highly recommended.
- Defective right out of the box.
     By A1BNCKCAPRXTTN on 2007-10-18
It's tough to give a review as this was defective and I didn't get to use it. The volume switch didn't work and it was on the lowest volume, leaving it of no use in any but the most cloistered of circumstances. The seller remarked on the high amount of returns and stated that manufacturer had delayed further shipping. I tried contacting Plantonics but they immediately shuffled me back to the seller. I still don't have the replacement. It's not been a good experience.
- Excellent headset
     By A1989944VHPI2I on 2008-09-02
I have tried the Jawbone II and Plantronics 925 as comparisons. I figured trying the best out there and seeing if they truly were for me. I found the sound quality on both the receiving end and callers end to be superb. If the reception is good, listeners can't tell I'm on a bluetooth.
Although there is some very minimal wind cancelling ability, don't expect to jog with the headset and converse as you can only do that in very very minimal wind.
Noise cancellation is good but not as good as the jawbone II.
Hope this helps.

good comfort & fit - wind noise cancellation no better than any of my other headset - good quality & functionality - do not purchase for wind noise canelling
- Good Bluetooth Ear Piece
     By A1UML2GOF74XEF on 2007-11-22
Unit arrived on time and in good shape. It works well with a Treo 700wx by rejoining the connection automatically without a lot of hassel. The treo, OS Ver 1.22, needs to be soft booted daily for this performance.
I found that I had to file the case seam lightly at the top of the unit to remove an uncomfortable sharp edge which irritated my ear.
The noise counciling works well enough that I can use the unit in vehicle with the window down or in a burger joint.
The charger is easier to use and better looking than my previous Moterola ear piece's setup.
- Fairly Good Headset
     By A2PL4KZQJ0VFOB on 2008-01-27
I have tried several brands and models of Bluetooth headsets and still have not found one that meets my requirements. I want a headset that is comfortable, light weight, fits snug and does not flop around, has good sound/voice quality and decent range. I tried three models of Motorola and all of them had very poor sound quality. I then tried a Sony, but the volume was far too low. I also tired a Nokia, but the forked shaped earpiece did not feel secure. I tried other brands and models, but all of them were either poor quality or had too many negatives. I have concluded that they do not make a headset that meets all of my needs. Therefore, I am going to settle for one that at least comes close. I guess that I am just too picky.
The one I am currently trying out is this Plantronic Voyager 520. My first impressions are that it is comfortable. The sound quality is good. It is lightweight and stylish. The noise cancellation is about average. I did notice something odd though. The directions say that you can answer and end calls, but nothing about redialing. Since most other headsets do have this feature, I decided to try redialing and see what happened. I simply pressed the button twice and sure enough, it did redial the last number. It seems strange that they do not tell you about that feature in the directions.
After test driving this Plantronic headset for a while, I have found this headset just might meet most of my requirements I listed above so I may keep it. However, I am still going to look around and try more headsets because I want two so that I can switch occasionally just for a change.
This seems to be a very good headset and I suggest you try it for yourself.
UPDATE: It has been several months since I posted this review. I stopped looking for the perfect headset, for now at least, and I am keeping this Plantronic 520. Since I have used it for so long here are my final conclusions. This headset is by far the most comfortable and the voice quality is very good. In fact, in quiet areas I can hear the other person just as well on the headset as I can on the phone itself. The only problem I have found is with the noise cancellation. In windy conditions or noisy environments the person I am talking to just can not hear me clearly or understand what I am saying. All they hear is mostly noise. However, I do like everything else about the headset. Therefore, I will still use it until, or if, I find one that is better.
- Just what I wanted
     By AOAJ9YUKGEVKS on 2007-12-28
The headset is stylish and light. The sound quality is tremendous. and it works with both my Blackberry and my Motorola at once, which was a key buying point. And it is much smaller and less cyborg looking than my husband's Voyager 510!
- The 510 is better.
     By A15UZA6XIWFGSX on 2008-01-06
I had (but lost) 2 510's which were great BT headsets. First off, why did they change the design? The 510 design was unique, while this one just follows along the boom mic trend of many manufacturers. The 510 fit perfectly due to its unique design and because it allowed the earpiece to go in the ear, It would fit and I could hear it perfectly. To that end, the thing came with 3 different sizes and if you chose you could use it without... thats 4 different ways to wear it in one ear. The 520 limits you to a hit or miss earpiece that while better than most, does not give the flexiblity that the 510 had. Voice quality is good... if you are in close proximity to the paired device and if you dont have the 520 in line of sight, you may hear garbling due to sags in reception, this is not a problem I recall with either one of the 510's I had. Looks... gimmicky, faux carbon fiber? kinda large and hangs off the side of your cheek like a wide open barn door. (ok that last one is kinda harsh and not very helpful) I really do find that it does kinda hang there, I prefer my headset to sit close to my cheek, even rest upon it, if it doesnt then it looks and feels strange. So why do I have the 520? well I bought it because I read many great things about it at several websites, and like many people were so awestruck with the performace of the 510 in most aspects that I figured that the 520 which is the upgrade should be far better. However this didnt prove to be the case, I've had it for less than a week, I'll be returning it to get a replacement 510 (for the 3rd time). I dont doubt that this is a good headset from a great company, I dont think they garnered all those positive reviews by chance. But this one is simply not the one for me, hopefully the 530 will be the one.
- Absolutely perfect

Don't buy into those other reviews, this headset is the best. Far superior to motorola. Great sound and easy controls.
- Great value and performance!
     By A20K0GI9YYG2VS on 2008-01-29
I was originally set on buying a Jawbone, but after reading a couple of reviews and recommendations on this headset, I decided to try it out. At half the cost of a Jawbone, I was skeptical. But I'm happy to report that it is a fantastic headset.
In addition to all the advanced features listed in the other reviews, the 520 is extremely lightweight and easy to put on. The construction is top notch. Also, I appreciate the ability to view the approximate battery power level every time I power-on the unit.
This headset is Bluetooth 2.0 which I believe has a higher data rate capacity. I'm not sure if this helps, but it certainly seems to have better voice quality performance (less static, stronger noise cancellation) than my two previous bluetooth headsets: Plantronics Voyager 510 and Motorola H500.
If you intend to be in extremely noisy environments, then the Jawbone may still be the best headset for you. However, if you're looking for a noise canceling headset for light to moderate noise level environments (such as a car with the windows up), then I highly recommend this headset.
- Great Headset
     By A44CQO858JFHD on 2008-02-13
The Plantronics 520 headset works great. I researched quite a few & this one was high on the list of almost all reviewers. It fits easily into my ear and is very comfortable. I can hear who I'm talking to very well & everyone I talk to while using it says they hear me as if I'm talking into my phone instead. It is fairly small & I don't feel like I have a large insect stuck to my ear (I think that's what the Motorolas look like). This is my first bluetooth headset, so when I got it I didn't know what the heck I was doing, but it was very easy to connect to my phone & to learn to use. I got it from AntOnline (through Amazon)for a great price & it was shipped quickly & with no problems. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a fair priced, reliable headset.
- Great Headset, Better than Jawbone in several aspects

Plantronics Voyager 520 Bluetooth Headset - Black/ Silver (75859-01)
I have used 6 bluetooth headsets and this is my favorite. Comfort, multi-point technology, ease of use and great sound in and out. I am ordering a second one for my wife who could not find a comfortable headset. This one fits us both and after a ton of calls I have not had one complaint about sound quality. We both tried the highly rated Jawbone, but both of us like the 520 better. The Jawbone does have better noise cancelling but the easier controls and comfort of the 520 make up for it. It is also much easier to put on, has great battery life, rugged construction and is a good value. If you carry two phones like I do, the multi-point allows you to pair two devices at the same time. I paired to my BlackBerry and Pantech Duo and can take calls from either one with the touch of the button. If you talk on the phone with a weedeater and a leaf blower beside you, or have trouble turning down the car radio when you get a call, check out the Jawbone. Otherwise save yourself some money and get the 520 Voyager. It's a winner.
- Easy to Use Bluetooth Headset
     By A1ENC0ALMHVBU on 2007-12-29
The ear piece is very easy to put on. It's comfortable and lightweight -- can't tell it's there most of the time. Making & receiving calls is easy with the 1-touch button on the mic boom. The size of the unit is compact. Although it's larger than the Jawbone, which I have used, it's slim and not too big. Incoming and outgoing sound is very good too. I recommend this over the Jawbone. I like it much better.Plantronics VOYAGER520 Voyager 520 Bluetooth Headset
- Excellent audio.
     By A2L23KU0RZYDKS on 2008-02-08
I got this to replace a lost Voyager 510. This model is much smaller and is more comfortable to wear (once you find the proper position for your ear shape). It's light weight, has excellent audio and quickly/easily pairs with both my laptop and my cellphone. Oh and did I say it is light weight and has excellent audio!
- Solid product, no problems.
     By A1D4HQZTRF6YLZ on 2008-02-11
Had the 510 before and this is a good replacement. Feels good in my ear, and doesn't have those "inserts" that the 510 had, which fall out, etc. Have seen no problems at all. I actually like the "interface" (buttons, tones, etc) better than the 510.
- Very good value headset
     By A1UJR3ZZ3CAGJ0 on 2008-02-11
I bought this headset to use for my Treo 680 smartphone, having had a very disappointing experience with a Plantronics 320 (excessive static, bad battery life, short range) and a Motorola H500 (constant disconnects, static), and this new headset was a huge improvement over the first two.
PROS:
1. Very easy to put on. The swivel and bendable ear hook accommodates my ear shape well. Occasionally I get the feeling that it's about to fall off, but it never does, which I suspect is the swivel design's problem.
2. It paired with my Treo quickly and easily - the QuickPair(tm) technology Plantronics uses made setup a breeze - as opposed to my two previous headsets.
3. It's very light and unobtrusive. I often forget that I'm wearing it.
4. Sleek and professional appearance.
5. Excellent sound quality. I used to get complaints from people whenever I used a bluetooth headset about not being able to hear me clearly or static, especially when driving. Didn't have that problem this time.
6. The docking cradle. A nice touch, although it takes a little getting used to.
CONS:
1. Plantronics should have included a vehicle charger in this kit.
2. The call/hangup and volume control buttons are merged into a single "rocker" switch, where, if you're not careful, you could accidentally hang up if you tried to adjust the volume.
3. Noise cancelling is OK, but fails badly when outdoors in windy conditions, although it helps cut out engine noise when I'm driving.
4. Volume was very high when I first used it: make sure you turn it down before making a call to avoid an unpleasant surprise.
Overall, this was a very good buy for me, and I highly recommend it for people looking for a mid-value Bluetooth headset.
- Disappointed

Volume is to low. The ear piece is also an uncomfortable protruding piece of rubber. Will return if it is not to late. Have had it about 30 days.
The vendor was quick and cheap. Not sure how they are with returns yet.
- 2 phone Honey! Works like a charm

I carry a personal and a business phone. I was looking for a headset that would connect to 2 phones without any manual re-pairing needed when I switch between the two. This headset answers which ever phone is ringing. If both phones receive a call, it sends the second one to voice mail. It does a great job without my having to do anything after the initial pairing of the two phones. It works beautifully.
- Very nice headset overall; don't like the button though

I've had this headset for a few days now, and so far it's been a good purchase.
Positive:
The headset is very lightweight and fits my larger-than-average ears quite well (much, much better than my old Motorola H500, which was too small). The sound is loud and clear, and the range is adequate.
Negative:
Not a huge fan of the volume button. It's actually a button (that you press to answer calls) and a rocker switch (that you use to adjust the volume) combined into one input device. Perhaps I'll eventually get used to it, but I'm docking the unit a star until then.
- Great first bluetooth headset

This is my first Bluetooth headset, which I purchased for use with my iPhone. Overall, it works great with it, is easy to operate, and I've found it fairly comfortable and fairly unobtrusive. It does occasionally feel like it's loosening up a bit around my ear but overall, it has lived up to my expectations thus far. My only complaints are that it doesn't come with a case or a car charger and that I made the HUGE mistake of purchasing it through the Apple store where it's twice as much.
