For Those With Half a Brain By A26IBUJKTTMQMH on 2008-09-04
Currently, the majority of the reviews on this page are feeble attempts at warning readers that this is not the brain dead silly CGI-fest that was released in 2008 starring Edward Norton. I'm here to say that I know exactly which Hulk movie page I'm on, and I know exactly which Hulk movie Blu-ray I'll be purchasing over the other, thank you very much.
When I saddled up for the ride into High Definition, Blu-ray was already victorious over HD-DVD, and Ang Lee's Hulk (2003) was currently exclusive to the dead format. Many a days I sulked, thinking they would never release Hulk on Blu-ray for me to soak in its breathtaking vistas and vibrant colors in High-definition. Then, August 1st, 2008 came around, and to my great excitement, it was announced that Blu was the new green. In my opinion, this movie was made for hi-def. I salivate simply at the thought of viewing the Hulk bound across the Utah desert in a seamless blend of CG and nature cinematography worthy of Planet Earth. It is apparent that the team of filmmakers behind this project approached it as a work of art, rather than a shallow popcorn comic book movie to make a quick buck. More films in Hollywood should be created in this fashion.
Beyond that of being beautiful visually, the Hulk also sets itself apart from the rest by being a heartfelt narrative that no Marvel comic-book adaptation could ever dream of being. Which is what turned many cold to the movie right off the bat. This was a comic book movie that could actually live and breath on its own, rather than rely on CGI and tacky "Hulk SMASH" dialogue. It attacked deep, psychological problems, making the real battle being that of Bruce Banner vs. The Hulk, instead of CGI green mass vs CGI brown mass with an anti-climactic finish.
If you're Blu, I highly recommend giving this film a view. It is bound to impress with its striking palette and intense action sequences. I am quite certain it will be added to my small collection of demo material for the Blu-ray format.
A dream of anger By A3SIB8M37UM0IA on 2008-09-06
Ang Lee is a superior director, and this is an introspective film on the nature of anger.
On the commentary Ang Lee mentions that he saw this movie as a "Dream of Anger"; an exploration on the nature of rage and what can cause a feeling that deep to become uncontrollable.
The Hulk is not your standard marvel superhero. In guest appearances he plays the 'Unstoppable Force'. In his own comic he runs from what he can't control. He doesn't put on a suit or fight crime. He is a creature driven by his base impulses. Impulses that take over his mind and body and drive him to do horrible horrible things, things that only later he discovers the consequences for.
Gee, sort of sounds like a metaphor for anger -- which is kind of the point of this film.
People complain about this movie because it's slow, introspective, and the hulk doesn't appear for over an hour of runtime. What they want is to put in a film, see a little bit of romance and some eye candy where things blow up. That is not what is in this film. What *is* in this film (and in my opinion is worth your time) is a study of what one man must do to come to terms with the monster that resides inside of him. This, like all films about hominid-morphs, uses an external monster to represent an internal struggle. This film, like much of Ang Lee's work, represents that struggle very well.
It's not a summer blockbuster. It doesn't have an explosive shiny battle at the end. What it does have is thought-provoking imagery and a complex statement about a complex issue. It is no wonder why your average American didn't like the film. It comes highly recommended for any fans of Ang Lee, and anyone who likes their movies filled with intelligence and metaphor.
All those proud of their ignorance make me angry, and in the words of the Hulk. . .
Action movie with depth and an actual plot By A1S9VL1DY9EMP2 on 2008-09-02
I've always liked the Ang lee version of the Hulk even though at the time most people didn't. After watching the 2008 summer version of the Hulk (The Incredible Hulk), I had to say that I really hated the new 2008 version. I thought the movie had no plots, horrible action sequences, and was just plain dumb. The 2003 version is really good, and I was really looking forward to it be released on blu-ray. Now that it's coming out, I'm definitely buying it.

Five stars for Ang's HULK??? YES!!!!! By AJMLG0O92LJ97 on 2008-09-19
I think this is another case of the domino effect. One critic gives it a bad review, the next does, the one after that will, and then swarms of people just watch it, looking for the problems the critics point out and call it a bad film. I think we should be able to form an opinion on our own without letting some desk jockey who hates movies to drive us to his or her own. Let's face it, it's not as bad as it was made out. It is a dark complex character driven movie. It's not the 2008 version, blah blah blah. Of course it isn't. But it is STILL VERY GOOD! Both copies of Blu Ray will sit right next to each other on my shelf, even as different as they are...they are still the ever Incredible Hulk!
- Hulk is a GOOD movie!
     By A3MZQKPLD4MWLZ on 2008-09-04
I think a lot of people get caught up in the popular opinion and write off this movie as a bad movie. If you actually watch it, I think Ang Lee did an excellent job, and in my opinion, it is better than the newer Incredible Hulk movie. A lot more thought was put into the plot, the "comic book" style cinematography was really cool to watch, and I even preferred the action sequences in the desert with the Apache helicopters, jets, and tanks versus the action sequences in the newer movie. Yeah, the dog fight scene was a little weird (especially when they "poof" after he defeats them), but it was still a surprisingly savage and raw fight scene. Plus, Nick Nolte was awesome as Bruce's insane dad, and I definitely liked Sam Elliot and Jennifer Connelly over William Hurt and Liv Tyler. The acting wasn't bad in the new movie, but the script just didn't give them much of a chance to act. Anyway, I'm excited about this coming to Bluray, and I think it's an excellent pickup for any true Hulk fan that is willing to think a little and enjoy a well-crafted movie.
- Not the 2008 version
     By A2ID1Y8AI8YTCU on 2008-09-01
This is the original with eric bana, and it was HORRIBLE...if you want to see mutant dogs fight hulk and him jumping around with the weirdest storyline, go for it, actually spend your money on gas instead, its more useful...
- Make sure you buy the 2008 version & not this one...
     By A2QTIW7CGQVS4F on 2008-09-03
I'm an avid movie watcher, and this one was absolutely dreadful. Even worse, they prolong the agony by making it over 2 hours long...I actually fell asleep.
For any Incredible Hulk fans out there, be sure to buy the 2008 version and not this one. This year's version was easily better than the previous, and it isn't even close...anyone who tells you otherwise is delusional.
- This may not be what you think it is
     By A181KBZVQ6PMWU on 2008-08-26
They seem to be going to great lengths to disguise the fact that this isn't this summer's "Incredible" Hulk. This is the Eric Bana/Ang Lee Hulk from 03. Just an FYI, I wanted to put that out there. I wouldn't have rated this but I was forced to in order to leave this comment.
- Passes time
     By A20EEWWSFMZ1PN on 2008-09-13
We all know it is a no-no to do genetic experiments on people. And once again a scientist David Banner has to do it to himself. Now to compound the problem he passes a trait onto his offspring Bruce Banner (Eric Bana). Add a little lab accident and et voila instant hulk.
This is not the best integration of real, animation and CGI. Yet the story is told and you have fun watching. There is a father / son conflict and a misunderstood Hulk dismantles a lot of military equipment with extreme prejudice. This film does not try to follow the TV series and is not so dated. The only real drawback is that Jennifer Connelly is just too cute and you forget to keep track of the story line.
- True to the classic comic title
     By A1Q6SDPOCNEM3K on 2008-09-23
While most people out there will tell you that this film isn't very good or even that it's downright bad, the majority of those people didn't/don't ever read the original comic series for the Hulk. The stories of the Hulk aren't about a costumed hero fighting criminals. They are about a man consumed with anger, who is driven to great lengths trying to deal w/his affliction, and the villainous characters who attempt to take advantage of Hulk and his gamma-powered strength. This film is about as "deep" as one could want from a film about a "superhero", while retaining it's strong comicbook feel.
Ang Lee's direction in this film is evident in it's character-driven plot, sensitive view of the relationship between father/child, and the traumatic effects of coming from a home broken by tragedy. The film has amazing performances by Eric Bana (Bruce Banner), Jennifer Connelly (Betty Ross), and Sam Elliot (General Ross). Bana's Banner is an intelligent and principled man who struggles deeply w/feelings of abandonement. Connelly plays a woman who has struggled to help a man torn apart by anger and doubt, with compassion and understanding. Sam Elliott turns in another fantastic performance as General Ross - a fiery, old soldier who's anger towards and distrust of Banner are softened by his deep-seated affection for his daughter.
This film is a great example of how the comicbook movie need not be riddled with comedic undertones and can still draw in those w/an open mind - truly, a modern classic.
- The Abismal Hulk
     By A1FPMGWN9D83AK on 2008-09-15
I have watched this movie several times, each in an attempt to understand the story. But each attempt at deciphering the story has been foiled by Ang Lee and his amazing ability to create the most confusing superhero movie ever.
If you want to see Hulk smash up some stuff, buy this movie.
If you want to see Hulk really smash up some stuff and actually have a good time watching the movie, buy The Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton. Do not waste your time and money on this movie.
- Great Movie/Blu-ray Difficulties
     By A2X9H68QLS42Q7 on 2008-09-24
I absolutely love this movie, BUT, unfortunately, I think I've received a bad batch of Blu-ray discs from Amazon. After three minutes of waiting for the movie to load, the first one would cause the Sony Blu-ray player to automatically reboot once the movie starts, no matter if it started from the beginning or at a random chapter. It wouldn't happen when I would play the Extras, only the movie. I asked for and received within 48 hours a replacement Blu-ray disc and encountered the same exact problem. And I know it's not the player, because I played other Blu-ray discs with no problems. Hopefully, I'll get to see it on Blu-ray soon because from what I saw on the opening menu, the movie looked great.

The special effects in this movie make it a "I wanna see it" flick. The storyline is ponderous at times and altogether predictable.
